3 Lambda Chi Alpha C huck Naslund '74 is forever grateful for the life experience and special friendships that Lambda Chi Alpha offered him while attending Rolla. His time in ADZ helped him achieve the success he has enjoyed in his career. Chuck credits his undergraduate years for the leadership skills he uses as an executive vice president at a Fortune 500 company. "Lambda Chi helped bring structure to my time in college. It also helped develop my leadership capabilities being an officer of the Chapter and taught me what it meant to lead a group of people to accomplish something." Chuck works at Ameren Corporation, formerly Union Electric, in St. Louis, overseeing the generation fleet and corporate building programs in all sectors of the business. He has been with the company for 40 years. "One of the most important highlights of my career was starting up and operating the 1200MW Callaway Nuclear Plant for 28 years and leading the merchant generation business by doing $1.5 billion of capital construction work to clean up our coal fleet. Most of all it's about the people and the great relationships I've built throughout our great company." The influence that ADZ had on Chuck's life and career influenced him to give to the Honoring Our Past, Securing Our Future campaign. "Supporting the capital campaign was my way of giving back some of my success, in the hope that future generations will have the same opportunity that was given me. In order for Lambda Chi to compete at Rolla with the other fraternities and campus housing, I believe it is essential that our facility be upgraded to today's standards. It's hard to believe that the buildings we utilized 40 years ago are still in use today." The best memories Chuck has from being an undergraduate revolve around the great friends he made in Lambda Chi, St. Pat's weekend, Greek Week and games, and winning in intramural sports. Chuck still has a core group of Lambda Chi friends in St. Louis with whom he regularly travels and socializes. Chuck and his wife, Jean, have been married for 39 years. They have three children: Greg, also a Rolla mechanical engineer graduate who works at Burns and McDonnel in St. Louis; Brian, a chemist biologist employed by Chemia in St. Louis; and Marissa, a biomechanical engineer who works for Siemens in Orlando, Florida. Chuck also has five grandchildren. "Lambda Chi was very important in my development, so when the opportunity to give back came up with the capital campaign, I jumped at it. It really is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to help the Chapter. Some of the happiest years of my life were in college, specifically at ADZ. When people ask me about my college experience, I tell them I couldn't have enjoyed it more, almost all because of Lambda Chi Alpha." In order for the Chapter to grow and continue recruiting the best and brightest men, he advises current members to treat prospects as if you're helping them as opposed to getting them to do something. "You won't know how much ADZ has benefitted you for many years. Recruits will never know the opportunity exists unless you make the effort to show it to them. Effort on your part can have a major impact on someone's collegiate experience and future. Try to pass the gift of LCA on." Reminiscing about his time as an undergraduate, Mike recalls cheering at UMR football games, St. Pat's weekends, Greek Weeks, mail runs, Indian, and many hours of ping pong, foosball, and shuffle board. He also remembers bowling with disadvantaged children, Chicky B dinners, and weekends spent repairing Camp Dom Bosque. He recalls a food fight started by the seniors his freshman year. "It was a lot of fun for about 15 minutes, followed by about four hours of everyone pitching in to clean." Other memories include football, soccer, volleyball, and softball intramurals. "We played a soccer final on a solid field of ice one year," he said. He also remembers his last St. Pat's at MS&T where his roommate, Bruce Colborne '81, was knocked 50 yards by a rogue parachutist. "We had to take Bruce to the hospital to fix his busted knee but still made it back by noon for the afternoon festivities." Mike and his wife, Jan, live in Austin, Texas. Jan is a Rice chemical engineering graduate working on a second career in counseling. Mike has two children, Miguel and Sonalie, both seniors at the University of Texas, and two step- children, Michael and Lindsey, both alumni from UT. When he's not working, Mike spends time playing pick-up soccer at Zilker Park and attends Camp Gladiator boot camp two to three times a week. He and his wife enjoy working in the yard, hiking, dining out, and traveling. He is contemplating retirement or a second career, "if I can find the courage."
