ByAidaCerkez The Associated Press SARAJEVO, BOSNIA-HERZE- GOVINA Marking the eve of the centennial of the be- ginning of World War I in their own way, Bosnian Serbs on Friday unveiled a monument in their part of Sarajevo to the man who ig- nited the war by assassinat- ing the Austro-Hungarian crown prince June 28, 1914. At the other end of the city, the Vienna Philhar- monic orchestra was re- hearsing for Saturday's grand EU-sponsored per- formance, planned as a sym- bolic start of a new century of peace at the place where the century of wars in Eu- rope started 100 years ago. The two separate events testify to the depth of lin- gering divisions in Bos- nia-Herzegovina, where one side performed works of Austrian, German and French composers in a sa- lute to European integra- tion while the other cele- brated the man who assas- sinated the emperor's heir as a national hero. Saturday's concert aims to emphasize the transfor- mation Europe has gone through, said Clemens Hells- berg, the President of the Vi- enna Philharmonic Orches- tra. "We feel obliged to do things in a better way than it was done in the past," the Austrian said, adding the or- chestra is delivering a mes- sage of humanity to those who want to listen. It will start with the Bosnian anthem and fin- ish with Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" — the official Euro- pean anthem — which sym- bolizes where Europe sees Bosnia's future, he said. In the Bosnian Serb East Sarajevo they have a differ- ent view of Bosnia's future: to divide the country so that the Serb part can join neighboring Serbia. During the unveiling cer- emony Friday, a young actor dressed as shooter Gavrilo Pricip ran on the stage and fired two shots in the air. He then cited a poem Prin- cip wrote in captivity which was followed by a Serbian folk dance. Later the actor pointed his gun into the air while posing in front of Princip's statue as people in the crowd shouted he should "shoot at NATO" or "shoot at the EU." "Gavrilo Princip was a freedom fighter and the Austro Hungarian empire was an occupier here," said the president of the Bos- nian Serb half of the coun- try, Milorad Dodik, after he unveiled the 2 meters-high bronze statue. "People who live here have never been on the same side of history and are still divided. We are sending different messages and that says it all about this country which is be- ing held together by inter- national violence," he said. A century ago Austria accused Serbia of mas- terminding the assassi- nation and attacked the country with backing from Germany. Serbia's allies, Russia and France, were quickly drawn in and later Britain, its sprawling Com- monwealth empire and the United States also joined the fighting. When the mass slaughter known as the Great War ended in 1918, it had claimed some 14 mil- lion lives. For the Bosnian Serbs Princip's shots on St. Vitus Day — a sacred Serb holiday of June 28 — announced the liberation from Austro-Hun- garian rule and a chance for including Bosnia into the neighboring Serbian king- dom. That same idea in- spired the Serbs in 1992 to fight the decision by Muslim Bosnians and Catholic Cro- ats to declare the former re- public of Bosnia indepen- dent when Serb-dominated Yugoslavia fell apart. A peace agreement ended the 1992-95 war without a winner by recognizing Bos- nia as a sovereign state but divided in two parts — one for the Serbs and the other shared by Muslim Bosniaks and Roman Catholic Croats. The Serb leadership sees the current division only as a step toward a final disso- lution and inclusion of their half into Serbia. "St. Vitus day is an in- spiration for all of us," said Nebojsa Radmanovic, the Serb member of Bosnia's joint three-member presi- dency. "It's an inspiration in the fight for our freedom, in a fight for our sacrifice and in our joint battle for a joint country, which we haven't managed yet to create," he said referring to a Greater Serbia. Serbs refused to take part in the commemora- tion in Sarajevo on Satur- day, where the EU has fi- nanced various interna- tional cultural events to mark the centennial. "Sarajevo is now a sym- bol of a century of wars in Europe but we are here to talk about peace and recon- ciliation," said Joseph Zimet, Sarajevo director general of the "Mission du cente- naire" — a French-led part- nership program managing the WWI commemorations. He added that it "was a pity" Serbs from Serbia and Bos- nia have "not joined us". Sarajevo mayor Ivo Kom- sic said those who refused to come "demonstrated not their attitude toward the past but toward the future of this region." Maestro Franz Welser- Most said the Vienna Phil- harmonic Orchestra came to Sarajevo "with a histori- cal burden" and with the in- tention to "send a clear mes- sage: Never again!" The Associated Press TUCSON, ARIZ. Mexican law enforcement on Thurs- day crossed into Arizona by helicopter and fired two shots at U.S. border agents. A Mexican law enforce- ment chopper crossed about 100 yards north into the Ar- izona desert, the U.S. Bor- der Patrol said in a state- ment. The helicopter then fired two shots on the To- hono O'Odham Indian Na- tion, which sits on the bor- der. Border patrol union leaders say the Mexicans fired at agents but that none of them were hurt. However, Mexican au- thorities have denied shoot- ing at agents and say they were under attack during a mission to find smugglers on the border. Tomás Zerón, the direc- tor of the Mexican attor- ney general's office investi- gative office, said that Mex- ican military and federal police who were conduct- ing an operation on a ranch in Altar, Sonora, were shot at by criminals. Mexican authorities never fired any weapons and in fact never crossed into the U.S. side of the border, he said. Art del Cueto, president of the local border patrol union, said four agents were in a marked patrol vehicle when they were shot at. "They could say they didn't fire at the agents in- tentionally but for them to say that they were no shots fired within the United States, toward the United States Border Patrol, is a lie. They got in contact with our managers and apolo- gized for the incident," del Cueto said. The Mexican helicopter was 15 yards from the bor- der agents when they were came under fire, Del Cueto said. He's also concerned that Tucson sector officials didn't notify the next shift of border agents that there had been a shooting, he said. "I think our managers within the area should have definitely informed the on- coming shift this had hap- pened. We're always on high alert, but I think it would raise a fear level for our agents," del Cueto said.
