F CUSOn Carolina Commons Holds Grand Opening Parks & Rec Free Text of Rainouts Other Alerts Also Sent to the Public Chalmers Pool and Splash Pad Open With high temperatures, the timing couldn’t be better to visit Chalmers Pool, Fayetteville’s only public pool. Operated by Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation, Chalmers Pool opened Memorial Day. The pool, located across from Fayetteville State University on Langdon Street at Seabrook Park, is open Tuesday through Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m., through Labor Day, Sept. 5. Memorial Day and Labor Day are the only two Mondays that the pool is open. Admission to Chalmers Pool is $1 for children 12 and under and $2 for visitors ages 13 and up. Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation also offers the Splash Pad during warmer months. The Splash Pad opened May 14, giving citizens an outdoor aquatic venue to visit prior to the pool’s opening. Located at 500 Fisher St. at Christina Smith Park, the Splash Pad allows residents to cool off as water sprinkles from a rainbow of colored arches. Onlookers can relax under the shaded tables near the Splash Pad. The Splash Pad is free and open to all ages through Sept.17. Wesley Meredith, County Carolina Commons is a Hope VI development that has been built in the Old Wilmington Road neighborhood. Carolina Commons is a $119 million project that replaces Delona Gardens and Campbell Terrace. Funding for the project started with a $20 million federal Hope VI grant in 2008. The project also includes funding from the City of Fayetteville, PWC, private investment and Cumberland County. Carolina Commons will have three communities for families and three for seniors, including 105 single- family homes and 550 apartments and town houses. Three communities are open for residents and another community is expected to open later in 2011. The two remaining communities are scheduled to be completed in 2012. Parks & Recreation staff researched text services beginning last year, but all of the services required payment. A suggestion from a new staff member, who used the service in Greenville, led to the department rolling out the program recently. “The free text service is free and easy to use,” said James McMillan, recreation division manager for the department. “We’re excited about this interactive form of communication because it parents, that a game or activity has been changed. customers and we invite them to sign up for this service.” To sign up, residents can text FCPRD to 84483 or visit the link: https://www.rainedout.net/team_ page.php?a=864a246217075c93bc80.
