JUNE 11-17, 2014 UCW 15 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM CUMBERLAND Cumberland County students representing two high schools and one middle school competed in the Soil and Water Area VII Envirothon and the North Carolina Envirothon competition recently. The Seventy-First Classical Middle School "Knights" team won first place in Area VII and went on to compete in the North Carolina Envirothon. Cumberland County Soil and Water Conservation District sponsors teams from schools in the county at Envirothon every year. The winning team from Seventy-First Classical Middle School is comprised of Mary Vorder Bruegge, Eugene Yun, Matthew Stidham, Forest Good, Alka Ghadiyaram and Advisor Sylvia Beckham Other local school teams that placed in the Area VII Envirothon were as follows: Fourth Place – "Team A" of Cape Fear High School: Burlington Peacock, Michael Post, Paul Morris, Gavin Calder, Shane Page and advisor Nathan Chabot Fifth Place – "Team C" of Cape Fear High School: Ryan Knowles, Monica Castro, Olivia Forbes, Alberto Lagos, Cole Caceres and advisor Nathan Chabot Sixth Place – "Hellbenders" of Grays Creek High School: Catelynn Williamson, Samantha Byrd, Keanna Edwards, Matthew Suite, Christian Mooney and advisor April Pittman Ninth Place – "Team B" from Cape Fear High School: Rebakah Bullard, Justin Starling, Adrianna Schmidt, Killian McDonald, Patrick McCall and advisor Nathan Chabot www.co.cumberland.nc.us School Teams Compete In Envirothon Summer Reading Clubs Offer Fun For All Ages The Cumberland County Public Library and Information Center Summer Reading Clubs offer activities for all ages through Aug. 15. Activities will be available at all library branches and online for children, teens and adults. The theme of the children's group is "Fizz Boom Read." The program includes reading, games and activities with prizes available. The theme for the teen group, for ages 12-18, is "Spark a Reaction" with programs on science, crafts, movies, anime and gaming. Adults can read five books and complete an online Reader's Log to receive a mug and be entered for the gift card drawing.
