Academic Excellence Brothers entered the spring 2014 semester with high motivation to excel in academics and athletics. During the fall 2013 semester, Missouri Gamma received a 3.197 GPA, just missing first place among all fraternities on campus by three-thousandths of a point. With this incredibly close finish, brothers have been motivating each other and themselves to excel academically. Carlson Leadership Academy Twelve brothers attended the annual SigEp Carlson Leadership Academy in Chicago, Illinois, in mid-February. Missouri Gamma received the Manpower Excellence award, the Grand Chapter Scholarship Cup, and the Chapter Home of the Year award, which was one of only three given out at CLA. Philanthropic Support Missouri Gamma hosted our second annual Charity Car Show with proceeds benefiting the St. Jude's Up 'Til Dawn event. We raised over $500 and handed out trophies for Best in Show, People's Choice, and Best Paint Job, as well as a handful of smaller awards. The money that was donated helped us in winning this year's Up 'Til Dawn competition. Missouri Gamma dominated the competition and won first place in overall donations per member, first in individual team donations, and first and second in the Minute to Win It challenges at the event. We raised $6,116, which came to $86.14 per person. Members have also been volunteering at the Newburg Children's Museum. The museum is undergoing a renovation and an addition, all sponsored by volunteers and donations. Tasks included scrubbing floors, hanging drywall, and installing new doors. Fourth in Intramurals Missouri Gamma took first place at the intramural track meet. The 4x100 relay was won by Scott Hendricks '14, Casey Zimmerman '14, Dan Fling '14, and Chance Alexander '14. Scott Hendricks also won the 100-meter sprint, and Dan Fling also won the high jump. Missouri Gamma swept the competition in the Jackie Robinson Wiffleball Tournament. We tied for second in weightlifting, and new member Kyle Bates '17 won his weight class. We are currently in fourth place in intramurals behind Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Nu, and Kappa Sigma. Accelerator Program Launched The executive board and alumni board have been working hard to develop a new scholarship program, called the Accelerator Program. This program is designed to help every new member get an "A" on their first chemistry and math test. This program will consist of a presentation provided by the campus Student Success Center on how to succeed in college. It will also include campus tutors, an in-house mentor tutor program, and practice tests that will be graded by a campus teaching assistant. Goals for 2014 The executive board has high aspirations for 2014. Our first goal was to implement a strong committee system, which was immediately achieved at the beginning of the semester. This system requires that every member be involved in at least one committee. The committees hold meetings regularly to update progress. This program was designed with the hope that it would keep every member involved and reduce the workload of the executive board. It has been working well, and we plan to continue using it. The second major goal of the executive board was to completely revise the bylaws. This outdated document had not been majorly edited since 2001 and it was over 120 pages long. We worked extensively on the document over winter break and presented the Chapter with a completely new document that has been reduced to only 26 pages. The document is now concise, specific, and much easier to use. As the spring semester comes to a close, Missouri Gamma looks forward to finishing our finals strong and recruiting a new group of brothers over the summer.
