Tuesday, May 24, 2011 – Daily News 5A GOP freshmen and earmark foes take care of home districts in defense bill WASHINGTON (AP) — Hard-charging Republi- cans who rallied voters last year with cries of ‘‘Stop the spending, ban the ear- marks’’ are quietly offering a more familiar Washington refrain now that they’re in Congress — not in my backyard. The massive, $553 bil- lion bill providing a budget for the Pentagon boasts mil- lions of dollars that Presi- dent Barack Obama didn’t request for weapons pro- grams, installations and other projects in districts from Illinois to Mississippi represented by House GOP freshmen. The additions look suspiciously like the pet projects that Republi- cans prohibited when they took over the House and that the new class of lawmakers, many with tea party back- ing, swore off in a promise to change Washington’s spending habits. Heated campaign talk of reining in spending and bar- ring earmarks often cools once candidates get to Con- gress and face the needs and demands of their districts, especially in times of wob- bly economic recovery and a widespread shortage of jobs. The House is scheduled to begin work on the bill Monday and vote on it this week. Republicans on the House Armed Services Committee insist the addi- tions are not earmarks. The committee chairman, Rep. (AP) — The world famous Roswell ‘‘inci- dent’’ was no UFO but rather a Russian space- craft with ‘‘grotesque, child-size aviators’’ devel- oped in human experi- ments by Nazi doctor and war criminal Josef Men- gele, according to a theory floated by investigative journalist Annie Jacobsen. Her book, ‘‘Area 51: An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military Base,’’ is about the secretive Nevada base called Area 51. One chap- ter offers the new Roswell theory, citing an anony- mous source who says Joseph Stalin recruited Mengele and sent the craft into U.S. air space in 1947 to spark public hysteria. Like past theories, Jacobsen writes that the U.S. government was involved in a cover-up of the UFO report, which has spawned space alien leg- end and turned this south- ern New Mexico town into a tourist attraction.
