It just wasn’t the one the Lady Spartans were hoping for as they tried to win their third consecutive Northern Section Division-II title. Alex Barney delivered a bases loaded walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning, Satur- day, as Chico squeezed by Red Bluff 2-1. Both teams had seen the sce- nario before. A year ago in the championship game it was Danisha Slay driving home Megan McColpin in the bot- tom of the eighth to give Red Bluff a 2-1 lead. In games like these, it can go either way. “It boils down to who can get the big hit at the big time and hats off to Chico — they did it,” Red Bluff coach J Howell said. The Panthers also got some help from a Red Bluff defense that turned from dominant to shaky in the eighth inning. Deelya Hooker opened up the inning for Chico with a single. An out later Jo Koons ripped a ball to Red Bluff shortstop McE- naney, who was only able to knock it down, giving the Panthers a pair of runners. Marissa Weeber then grounded to second base. Red Bluff’s Haley Harris tried to swipe a tag at Koons as she ran by, but missed, then her throw to first base was dropped. The bases were loaded. Barney stepped into the box and flared a soft shot into left field, easily scoring Hooker and lifting Chico to the section champi- onship. It was yet another ball hit weak- ly off of Red Bluff’s pitcher McColpin, who struck out five bat- ters and settled down for a strong performance once Chico had grabbed an early lead. The Panthers had taken that lead on the first pitch of the bottom of the second inning, when their catcher Hannah Wagner rocketed a solo home run to right-center. Red Bluff would get the run back in the fourth. With one down, McEnaney dotted the left field foul line with a double and two batters later Bryce Etzler came through with an RBI single to tie it at 1-1. With the momentum on their side, the Spartans got runners in scoring position the next two innings with just one out each time. But in neither inning could they capitalize. Panthers, who almost ended it in the bottom of the seventh inning when they got a runner to third base, before McColpin shut the door. Red Bluff sent up the top of its order in the eighth inning, but Smith induced a grounder back to her at the pitching rubber and a pair of strikeouts to set them down in order. Then she watched as her offense got the job done. It was the final high school game for McEnaney, Danisha Slay, Courtney Boes and Aubrey Lair. Red Bluff reached the champi- Giants sweep A’s with win in extras SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Emmanuel Burriss was walking into the bat- ter’s box when he locked eyes with Darren Ford standing on second, a small sign only the two close friends could communi- cate without mut- tering a word. ‘‘It was more so if I get a hit, you better score,’’ Bur- riss said. ‘‘It wasn’t so much I’m guaranteeing a hit.’’ Burriss singled home Ford for the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning, and the San Francis- co Giants completed a three-game sweep of the cross-bay rival Oakland Athletics with a 5-4 victory Sunday. Burriss’ line drive off reliever Brian Fuentes (1-6) was hit hard enough to make it a close play at the plate. The speedy Ford slid in just ahead of right f ielder Ryan Sweeney’s throw, sending the Giants running out of the dugout to celebrate their fifth straight victory and seventh walk- off win this season. ‘‘I don’t know who else scores in the game except Darren,’’ Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. ‘‘Any- body else and it’s not even close.’’ San Francisco put the exclamation point on the latest edition of the Bay Bridge Series. Pinch-hitter Nate Schier- holtz hit a tying, two-run homer in the eighth off Grant Balfour over the right-field wall and just short of splashing in McCovey Cove. The rally spoiled another stellar out- ing by A’s starter Gio Gon- zalez and sent Oakland tum- bling to its fifth straight loss and ninth overall at AT&T Park. Sergio Romo (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings to help the Giants win their 10th straight home game. San Francisco is 11-0 in one-run games at its cozy waterfront ballpark this sea- son. ‘‘I feel like we’re saying this every night,’’ Bochy said about the close wins. ‘‘But to win this many con- secutive games at home is pretty amazing.’’ The Giants stifled their neighbors across the bay with solid pitching in the first two games, with ace Tim Lincecum throwing a three-hitter Saturday after Ryan Vogelsong allowed only one unearned run Fri- day. When Oakland finally found a way to score in the finale, it simply wasn’t enough. It was that kind of week- end for the visitors.
