H o n o r i n g t h e P a st , Bu i l d i n g t h e F u t u r e Restoring the Chi Psi Tradition at Ole Miss o le Miss is a university with a strong Greek heritage and traditions. Becoming a part of this rich Greek system meant Michael Bennett '77 would have the opportunity to engage in this unique Ole Miss heritage in many ways. As an only child from the small town and schools of Baldwyn, Mississippi, Michael had to make a major transition into the much larger social and academic environment of the Oxford campus. Chi Psi provided him with structure, community, and a group of like-minded brothers to bond and grow with. Michael, a fairly reserved and shy teenager, blossomed at Chi Psi. Through his involvement in fraternity academic, leadership and social activities, he grew as he met more people. Recruitment became one of his favorite annual events. He loved the whole process and preparation, but mainly the interaction with new potential members. With the resolution of new pledge classes, "it represented how the fraternity continued." His love of being sociable, and marketing the strengths and benefits of his fraternity to new recruits, continued to grow and he eventually applied these acquired skills to his work career as a CPA and accounting firm partner. Michael is the managing partner of the Houston office of Grant Thornton LLP, one of the six largest global accounting, tax and advisory firms. Over the course of his 37-year career in professional services, he feels fortunate to have had a wide variety of clients, the ability to utilize his academic, social and "people" skills that he learned at Ole Miss, plus opportunities to have seen the world. He has visited 37 countries. Because Michael lives so far from the University, he hasn't been able to be as active in the fraternity in past years. However, this campaign has given him the chance to join with other Brothers who believe that with alumni help, Chi Psi will once again be a leader at Ole Miss. "I know that this capital infrastructure is the key to Chi Psi rising and remaining a strong part of Ole Miss fraternity life," he said. "The heritage of Chi Psi is very strong at Ole Miss, but it takes bricks and mortar to compete in this well- established Greek stronghold." In his free time, Michael enjoys playing golf, and traveling with his wife, Janet, and children: Stephanie, Christina, and Ryan (a sophomore at Ole Miss).
