If you're looking for glitz and glamour, a good time and great deals, look no
further than the Professional Women of Fayetteville's Evening in Hollywood, Oct. 9
at IT'Z Entertainment City.
The annual fundraiser (and you can put the emphasis on FUN) is the only
time the club's members go out into the community seeking funds, with the goal
of funding their endowments at Methodist University and Fayetteville Technical
Community College. They hope to raise
between $15 and $18 thousand this year,
which is a huge leap from when they
started this fundraiser eight years ago.
"The fi rst year I think we raised
$5,000," said Liz Varnadoe, president of
the Professional Women of Fayetteville.
"and last year we gave $7,000 to
Methodist University, $7,000 to
Fayetteville Technical Community College
and $2,000 to the Women's Center."
The organization, made up of
professional women from throughout the
community, sees education as the key
to success. To that end, funds from the
group's endowment are spent on young
women who are attending college with an
eye to establishing a business or becoming
an entrepreneur. Each year, the club tries
to add money to the endowment.
"We've helped a lot of women. We help a lot of ladies from different countries,
too," said Varnedoe, noting that the money given is often a contribution to the
recipient's education, but it is not always a full scholarship. By doing this, the
endowment is able to help more women.
For anyone who has ever attended one of the annual events, you know what's
in store. There will be food – lots of it. There will be drink – it's a cash bar, so it's
up to you how much of that there is - and there will be deals. Lots and lots of deals.
The main event of the evening is the annual auction. Each year club members
go out into the community seeking items for
the auction. They never come up short and
the sheer variety of items for sale is somewhat
overwhelming. In years past they've had
everything from one-of-a-kind jewelry to
scooters and everything in between.
"Carpet One has given us a carpet," said
Varnedoe. "We've gotten several jewelry items,
we've gotten a Wii and a digital camcorder
and lots of Coach items and more. "
The use of a beach house for a week has
also been donated. These are just some of the
items that will be available for bidding.
The silent auction is always a favorite.
Bidders can walk around and place their bids
on a variety of auction items, and then keep
their eye on the bids to ensure that they are
on top.
The event begins at 5:30 p.m. and ends
at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be
purchased at the door or by contacting a member of the Professional Women of
Fayetteville at 910-273-5213.
