Diversity and Authenticity: Two Qualities J. J. Hirsch '95 Saw in SAE DePauw Q: Why did you decide to join Sigma Alpha Epsilon? A: I was really impressed with the diversity in the chapter. It is hard to bucket SAEs into any one group. I really enjoyed the fact that I had friends with diverse interests and backgrounds. There was a real feeling of authenticity that I found attractive. Q: What did your undergraduate experience at DePauw University mean to you? A: I will always look back at my years at DePauw as some of the most fun and rewarding in my life. I think that I first started to recognize my strengths and weaknesses in college. DePauw provided an excellent platform to work on both. Q: What are some of your favorite memories? A: There are countless times in my hectic life of family and work that I yearn for a Friday afternoon just hanging out with friends on the porch of SAE. Some of the best stories were born on warm sunny days watching a day in the life of DePauw from a wooden rocking chair on the porch. It was a real simple pleasure during a less frenetic stage of life. Q: What degree did you earn? A: I earned my BA in communications. Q: How did the fraternity prepare you for life after college? A: SAE was the first organized community that I was a part of. It taught me the importance of structure, rules, and roles in an organization. I was amazed at how effective a group of teenagers and 20-something's could be at running a house when they had a good plan. Q: Please tell us more about your work as a director at Twitter, and your previous work at Google? A: At Twitter I lead a business that works with our retail partners. My team is responsible for managing the overall relationship across ad sales, business development, and partnerships. I moved to Twitter in the fall of last year after having spent nine years at Google leading different teams across multiple products. I have been able to grow with Silicon Valley-based companies while staying in Chicago near family and friends. My role at Twitter has me focused on building a business and a team around a rapidly evolving platform. Q: Do you keep in touch with any of your fraternity brothers? If so, who and how? A: I am lucky to have multiple fraternity brothers who live in the same area as I do. I often find myself bumping into them in town or at sporting or school events. Members of my SAE class at DePauw '95 try to get together every year or so but geography and work and family responsibilities have made it tough in the past few years. Q: What are some of your hobbies, and what do you do in your free time? A: My free time is totally dedicated to my family. My wife, Lisa, and three sons: Jack (9), Elliott (7), and Colin (5) are very patient and understanding of a hectic travel schedule, so I spend every minute I can with them away from work. We love to travel together and have a goal of visiting every state in the next 10 years.
