INSIDE: Alumnus Spotlight — 2 t Strong Changes Being Made for the Future — 3 t Annual Campaign Donors — 3 IndIana delta PrePares for the future Much-Needed House Improvements Ahead at 509 S. Locust fter my last message sharing the new relationship with SAE National and the F&H group, I feel it's time to share an update on a few of the great things happening at our chapter. There are three things I would like to touch on: the transfer of the house, house improvements, and sustainability of our beloved chapter. To start, we have been working hard with DePauw and SAE to get all of the appropriate documentation gathered to make the transfer of our house to SAE National complete. We are close, and as a testament to our relationship with National, the following news may at first seem upsetting but will demonstrate the positive relationship with our fraternity that has been built at a national level and the support that is available to our chapter. In January, the chapter house sustained damage from burst pipes thanks to record-cold temperatures in Greencastle. The home suffered water damage to several rooms as well as our fire protection wiring throughout the house. While this was certainly a crisis, as many of us have learned in our careers, "never waste a crisis." The House Corporation and our partners with SAE F&H saw this as a tremendous opportunity. The insurance is taking care of the damages from the pipe breaks, and after just one conversation with F&H it became clear that it was time to move ahead with some needed renovations. The men of the chapter graciously agreed to live in university housing while we focused on delivering a world-class house for the fall of 2014. Keep in mind that F&H at this time has not completely taken ownership of the house and yet they are opening their checkbooks and delivering ahead of schedule on some much-needed infrastructure and cosmetic enhancements to the house. What exactly is happening? • Completely new fire protection system with new smoke detection installed throughout the house (this is from the insurance and is valued at around $40,000). • The formal living room received all new lighting, ceilings, and a new hardwood floor. • The TV room (aka the library) is getting new recessed lighting, a new 80-inch TV, and new hardwood floors. • Bedrooms are being completely skim coated to smooth out the walls, new paint, new flooring, and all new furniture. • Heating and A/C is being addressed with state-of-the-art Fujitsu ductless heating and A/C for each room as well as all public areas. I believe this will make us the only fraternity to be completely air conditioned come fall 2014. • The entire house has been insulated. That's right—we had zero insulation in the walls and the attic. What a difference this has made already! • The whole house will receive new windows that fit the style of our house and will help improve our energy bills. • The entire house, including the stairwells, are being repainted and decorated with our rich history and legacy of success on DePauw's campus. It's no doubt that SAE will have the finest house on campus in just a few months. Put this year's June Alumni Weekend on your list so you can be the first to see this transformation. Finally, we get to sustainability. It will come as no surprise that a project of this magnitude costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. I do not know the exact figure but I know we are looking at around $600,000 to $750,000 to dress this old lady up. Remember that we were very fortunate to have no mortgage, we had just installed a new roof, had the house painted with 60-year paint, and had completely renovated the bathrooms and installed a fire-sprinkler system. A majority of these improvements came from a grant from the university for health, safety, and security upgrades to the tune of approximately $450,000. The men of Indiana Delta have been very generous with their giving to the DePauw annual fund and some extraordinary gifts of kindness to enhance the learning experience. We ask that you remember the good times at 509 S. Locust and continue to provide for future generations who grace our house. Thank you all for your continued support and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in June.
