The top-seeded Vikings bombard- ed the No. 8 Cardinals and cruised to a 16-0 victo- ry in the opening round of the Northern Section Division I playoffs Friday at Doryland Field. “We were kind of up and down all year. It was kind of rough,” Corning coach Tom Tomlinson said. “We’re not blessed with great talent. We just tried to get some things done with some guys and today it was apparent that we didn’t get a whole lot better as the year went on.” The Vikings (22-4) wasted little time establish- ing control of the game, and put up five runs in the bottom of the first. Zeke Colby and Henderson both had base hits to start the rally, while later, teammate Ryan Souza plated three runs on a line drive to right. Souza finished with five RBIs on the day. Defensively, the Vikings were just as dominant. Freshman Ryan Dufort went the first two innings, while Cory Louber threw the two that fol- lowed, and Eli Stanley closed in the fifth. The Lady Spartans won 10 of 15 events at Friday’s Eastern Athletic League-South Championships as freshman Adrienne Hinkston was good for four of those wins. Hinkston was first in the 100 meters (13.58), 200 meters (27.40), 400 meters (1:00.41) and teamed with Joanna Smith Conrad, Roxanne Luppino and Jessie Slade to win the 4x100 relay (52.00). Meanwhile Alana Hinkston won the triple jump (30’5”). Katelin Collins grabbed wins in the 300-meter hurdles (50.82) and long jump (14’8.75”) and Meaggan Rector also grabbed a pair of wins by taking first in shot put ((36’8.25”) and discus (104’6”). The 10th win came in the 4x400 relay as Luppino, Slade, Conrad and Erin Eicholtz turned in a time of 4:18.39. It was also a strong day for the Spartan boys, who won eight events. Colin Dahlberg stayed perfect on the season with wins in the 100 meters (11.45), 200 meters (22.96) and long jump (20’8”). Dahlberg, Jeff Foster, Zach Iver- son and Michael Stone won the 4x100 relay with a time of 43.71 sec- onds. Iverson won the 400 meters (51.49) and Cody Lehman took first in the 110-meter hurdles (16.56). Jonah McInnis was first in the triple jump (40’3.75”) and Zak Stro- ing won discus (142’3”). Shasta slides by Spartans BASEBALL By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor The third time wasn’t the charm for the Spar- tans. Shasta knocked out Red Bluff in the opening round of the Division 1 baseball playoffs with a 4- 2 win Friday. It was the third time the Wolves (11- 12) beat Red Bluff (21-8) this season. The loss not only ends the Spartans’ season, but it finished the high school careers of seven seniors. Over the past two sea- sons Gerald Baker, Joel Duggins, Jordan Fox, Casey Hilsee, Storm Lewis, Zane Medeiros and Richard Penne had back- to-back 21-win seasons, reached a Northern Sec- tion final and captured the school’s first league title since 1999. “They’re really good human beings and they won a lot of games,” coach Joe Gallaty said. Red Bluff got off to a hot start, Friday. Shortstop Mitch Robi- son made a web gem leap- ing grab to rob Shasta’s leadoff hitter Devin Short of a base hit. After Medeiros fin- ished pitching a 1-2-3 first inning the Spartans wast- ed no time in pushing across the game’s first run. With one out, Fox dou- bled down the first base line and was driven home by the next batter Modesto Ramirez, who doubled to the center field fence. Medeiros and the Spar- tans defense kept rolling until the fourth inning Scoreboard MLB American League Friday’s results Chicago at Oakland, late Boston 5, New York 4 Cleveland 5, Seattle 4 Detroit 3, Kansas City 1 Tampa Bay 3, Baltimore 0 Texas 4, Los Angeles 1 Toronto 2, Minnesota 0 Saturday’s games Daily News photo by Rich Greene Shasta’s Mack Drake slides in front of Red Bluff catcher Modesto Ramirez. when Mack Drake got Shasta started with a lead- off triple. Two batters later Cody Albertson grounded to Robison at short. Robison threw home, but Drake slid under the tag to tie the game 1-1. Shasta’s pinch runner then stole second base and reached third on a wild pitch, which proved costly as Andrew Lauritzen drove him in with a two- out RBI single to put the Wolves up 2-1. Red Bluff then got beat up and even bloodied in the sixth inning. Drake again got Shasta started, this time with a leadoff single. After Medeiros got his fifth strike out of the game, Albertson singled to put runners on first and second base. Jacob Foster grounded to first base, but the ball took a sudden, unexpected and huge hop and smacked Lewis in the face. With blood pouring from Lewis’ nose, Drake turned the corner at third base and scored to make it 3-1 Shasta. After borrowing a jer- sey from a junior varsity call-up, Lewis would return to the game follow- ing a delay. But two batters later Brock Callaway did more damage for Shasta with an RBI single to make it 4-1. Shasta would eventual- ly load the bases, before Baker relieved Medeiros on the mound and got Car- son Parks to foul out to Robby Lasby down the third base line. The Spartans had their chances to climb back into the game. In the bottom of the sixth, Baker and Duggins drew back-to-back walks and Lewis singled to load the bases with one out. But Red Bluff would come up empty as Shasta pitcher Jacob Foster shut the door from there. Tyler Reed pinch hit for Red Bluff to start the seventh inning and drew a walk to fire up one last Spartans’ rally. Following a foul out, Fox drew a walk and Ramirez singled to once again load the bases for the Spartans. Baker cut the lead to 4- 2 with a fielder’s choice ground out to score pinch runner Taylor Figgs from third. But with two outs and runners on the corners, Foster induced a ground ball back to the mound to end the game. “They got timely hits and we didn’t,” Gallaty said. “We had opportuni- ties.” Despite the first round exit, Gallaty was positive about the completed sea- son, his second as Spar- tans skipper. “Great season. Great group of young men. Haley Harris led off the game with one of her two base hits. After a successful sacrifice bunt from Megan McColpin, Emily McEnaney drove in Harris with an RBI single. Brittney Fletcher singled to put two runners on and then Etzler blasted a 3-run homer to make it 4-0. Courtney Boes drove in Danisha Slay in the second inning to expand Red Bluff’s lead. Weaver led off the third inning with a solo shot and in the sixth inning Fletcher drove home Harris to cap the scoring. McColpin allows just one hit and picked up the win, strik- ing out six batters.
