Tom came to Iowa State from his hometown of Des Moines, an easy-going, funny, artistic, and free-spirited person who also knew the discipline of being in ROTC. One example of Tom's easy- going nature was when he allowed the ATW VEISHEA parade float to be bolted directly onto his convertible, without complaint. Passions of Tom's included cruising Ames on his motorcycle, attending Cyclone football games, organizing functions, and he loved music. Satch was also passionate about ISU Hockey, but his first love was always flying. After college he joined the Navy, where he garnered his skills as a pilot. After some time, he left the Navy and spent his career pursuing his passion as a pilot for commercial airlines, charter companies, and as a flight instructor. Tom and his wife, Kathryn, made Portland their home base. A few years ago he was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). Tom never lost his spirit or sense of humor in dealing with it. Always staying in touch with brothers via Facebook and e-mail, he was a good writer, quick with a unique comment or observation. He was a popular member of First Unitarian Church and had many Portland friends who loved and visited him often—along with his family and ATW visitors. Tom fought the fight well, with grace, positivity and humor, and is someone his brothers will always admire and remember. "Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return." reMeMbering tOM "satCh" hendriCks '73 Satch's college photo.
