I t is hard to believe it has been almost 23 years since the current ATW house was christened on October 26, 1991. The chapter house is sound and it has great curb appeal. However, the interior is dated, in need of a facelift, and lacking the infrastructure and amenities to attract the top 2014-15 students to become ATW brothers and leaders. QUALITY COUNTS–LEADERSHIP COUNTS–SCHOLARSHIP COUNTS You all know this because you are part of the Iowa State ATW Gamma Upsilon legacy. We need your help now to move our campaign forward to raise $1.25 million of which $1 million pledged/contributed is required for the construction loan. If we can meet this campaign threshold by June 1, 2014, we will be able to begin construction and complete the renovation by the end of the summer in time for the 2014-15 fall recruitment and school year. We have raised pledges and cash contributions of just over $700,000 to date; thus, we are $300,000 short of our interim June 1, 2014 goal. Please do not delay or put your pledging/contributing off until later. MAKE THE PLEDGE THIS WEEK! Brother Bill Burke '74 has pledged close to $300,000, which meets our highest level of giving, the Glazebrook Society of $250,000 or more. We hope that one or more of our brothers will be able to step up and meet the Blackfeet Society level of pledging, which is $100,000-$249,999. We currently have no one at this level of giving. Brother Bill Gardiner '52 has pledged $50,000 for the True Merit Society level of giving of $50,000-$99,999; we hope other brothers will be able to join Bill at this level. We have five brothers who have pledged at the Maltese Cross Society level of giving, which is $25,000-$49,999; one brother who has pledged $15,000, which is at the 1908 Society level of giving; and six brothers who have pledged at the Gamma Upsilon Society level, which is $10,000-$14,999. Pledges and contributions of $25,000 or more are eligible to have a room named after the contributor as well as a named annual or bi-annual scholarship. Pledges of $10,000 or more are eligible for a tax deduction by giving to the ATW Foundation-Gamma Upsilon Educational Fund. Tax deductible matching funds are available through the ISU Foundation that can be fed back to the Gamma Upsilon Educational Fund in support of Preserving Our Past, Foundation for the Future renovation and scholarship program. Payments can be spread out; however, we need as much cash as possible up front to qualify for the construction loan. PLEDGE CLASS CHALLENGE Last fall, Gamma Upsilon issued a Pledge Class Challenge by year of initiation designed to get our collective competitive nature stirred and help complete the Preserving Our Past, Foundation for the Future campaign. Individual pledge classes (by year of initiation) that meet one of the two criteria by June 1—obtain the highest participation percentage or raise the largest total dollars per class—will be eligible to receive naming rights to rooms in the renovated chapter house. As we mentioned in the mailing you received in December 2013, we need to aggressively increase our alumni participation. We have a contribution rate of only 10% (92 contributors) of our total alumni base. The average alumni participation rate among recent Greek chapter campaigns is 25%. We have some pledge classes with only one or two contributors and worse, there are some pledge classes where no brothers have made a pledge of any kind. We must find the resolve to meet or exceed 25% participation if we are to be successful in meeting the financial goals of this campaign and thus, compete as one of the top fraternities on the campus of Iowa State University. Since the Pledge Class Challenge was issued four months ago, $52,542 in new pledges have been received for a total of $706,189. This response was good, but much more is required to fund our project. Please do not delay, make the pledge this week. If you have questions, give us a call. COMPETITION INCREASES We hope to begin construction this June, but in order to do that we must have more pledges/contributions in hand. If not, the project will slide to the right and we will miss the opportunity to compete aggressively and effectively in the upcoming fall recruitment! The Greek and dormitory living environment has been updated and improved significantly compared to when most of us were in school; it is just the nature of change at Iowa State University and across the nation. The time is now to make a pledge to the capital campaign. Thank you to the Gamma Upsilon Chapter brothers who have already contributed your time, energy, and funds toward the future of our chapter. If you have not yet contributed, please help us to keep the momentum going by filling out and returning the enclosed pledge card this week. We ask that every brother consider a pledge of $2,500, $5,000, $7,500, or more: $2,500 is only $500 per year or $42 per month over five years. If you are able to send in your first payment by June 1, we greatly appreciate the cash in hand for construction.
