Now it’s up to Mayor Kevin Johnson and the business community to come up with a viable plan for a new arena after so many failed attempts in the past. ‘‘This is one of the proudest moments of my life because the community believed when no one else did,’’ Johnson said Monday. ‘‘We kept believing. And if you believe, any- thing is possible.’’ The decision by the Maloof family to keep their team in Sacramento rather than apply for relocation to Anaheim, Calif., is only temporary. Co-owner Joe Maloof and NBA Commissioner David Stern made clear that the team will leave after next season if an arena plan is not in place. ‘‘We spent 13 years and millions of dollars to try to get an arena built,’’ Maloof said. ‘‘We don’t have the answer. By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor It took an extra hole to decide the 2011 Les Schwab Tires Red Bluff Pro- Am, but it only took Joe Carlton two shots. Carlton chipped in for eagle from about 70 yards out, Monday, to win a three-player playoff as well as $5,000 to give an exciting conclusion to the Wilcox Oaks tournament’s 20th edi- tion. Defending champion Dave Carr and 2009 team champion Dane Judson finished in a tie for second — with their second shots resting on the green — birdie putts that would never be taken. “It was a good shot. What are you going to do,” Carr said after firing Monday’s low, a 67 to force his way into the playoff. “If you’re going to lose, that’s the way to go.” Meanwhile Carlton was tied for the lead headed into final round and on what he thought was going to be his final hole, his putt lipped out from 8- feet out. As it would turn out he wouldn’t even need his putter again when he got a second chance to break the three-way tie of golfers at 2-under. Carlton’s drive on Hole 1was longer than both of his opponents, which gave “I hit a 66-degree — didn’t want to spin it and it came out perfect,” Carlton said. His approach landed a few feet short of the hole and rolled a short dis- tance in from there to the excitement of the gallery gathered behind him. Carlton, an assistant professional at Windsor Golf club, said the prize money will go towards his goal of get- ting his Class A professional license. It was his second year playing in the Red Bluff Pro-Am and and in that time he said he’s learned to respect the course’s famed Oak trees. It was almost a four-person playoff, but Isaac Sanchez missed a 15-foot birdie put on his final hole to finish a shot back at 143 and in fourth place. Greg Senestraro placed fifth with a 144. Steve Deveraux and Jason Schmul shared sixth place. Sevillano Links professional Kyle Hanson, Mike Paul, Brett Viboch and two-time champion J.J. Abraham tied for eighth place. The winning Pro-Am team was professional Jason Schmul along Greg Lee, J.B. Stacy, Tom Eubanks and Keith Thomas. They fired a 402. The Spartans’ team of Brandon Ragone, Iverson, Jonah McInnis and Stone also won the 4x400 relay. Dominic Lightfoot won the shot put and placed second in the discus. Red Bluff finished with 112 points, behind Yreka’s 141. Enterprise was third with 90. Ty Smith was second in the 30-meter hurdles and McIn- nis tied for second in the high jump. Iverson took third in the 400 meters and Cody Lehman was third in the 110-meter hurdles. The Lady Spartans’ relay team of Roxanne Luppino, Adrienne Hinkston, Erin Eicholtz and Jessie Slade won the 4x400 relay. Eicholtz was first in the 800 meters. Yreka won the girls’ competition with 106 points. Del Norte was second with 88 and Red Bluff was third with 74. Hinkston had a pair of second place finishes in the 200 and 400 meters. Kayla Thayer tied for second in the shot put. Jessica Taylor was third in the 3200 meters. The 4x100 relay team of Joanna Smith Conrad, Hinkston, Luppino and Slade placed third. BASEBALL In the first released baseball playoff standings, the Red Bluff Spartans (20-6) hold the No. 3 seed in Division 1. Corning (6-12) is holding onto the final playoff spot — the No. 8 seed. Pleasant Valley (20-3) and Foothill (17-5) are the top ranked teams. After Red Bluff, Oroville (14-7) is fourth followed by Chico (13-7), Shasta (9-10) and Paradise (6-12). In Division 4, Los Molinos (5-4) is in the fifth spot. Modoc (10-3), Hamilton (9-5), East Nicolaus (8-4) and Portola (12-6) top the division. The Mercy Warriors (0-8) are ranked last in Division 6. The Cardinals split a doubleheader Friday with Yreka. Michael Garcia pitched Corning to a 12-3 win, behind seven strong innings and six strikeouts. Garcia also doubled twice and drove in two runs as part of a 4-for-5 performance at the plate. Cole MacLachlan had three hits including a double and Dakoda McFall doubled and singled. Austin Grootveld drove in on a run and had a pair of hits. Clay Van Doorn, Tyler Price, Quintin Flores, Parker Johnson and Tyler McIntyre also drove in runs. In the 7-5 loss, McIntyre homered, to go along with three rbis, a single and a pair of walks. MacLachlan doubled, as did Price who drove in a run and singled. Flores also drove in a run. Los Molinos swept a doubleheader over Quincy Friday. The Bulldogs won the first game 2-1 then the second 10- 9 to improve to 5-4 on the season. SOFTBALL The Lady Spartans (20-4) trailed Chico (16-3) and were tied with Pleasant Valley (15-9-1) for second in the initial Division-II softball rankings. Corning (10-9-1) was tied for fourth in six-team Divi- sion-III. Paradise (19-6) leads the division. In Division-V, Los Molinos (4-9) was tied for 12th place. Mercy (1-5) is tied for 15th in Division-VI.
