2A – Daily News – Tuesday, May 3, 2011 Community people&events MILITARY Cadet Ian Murphy Ian Murphy, a cadet in the University of San Francisco (USF) Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) program, recently received the George C. Marshall Award. Recipients are selected from their respective detachments based on scholarship, leadership, physical fitness, and com- munity involvement. They are college seniors and a majori- ty holds senior leadership positions within their schools or Army ROTC detachment. Murphy is the Battalion Com- mander of the USF ROTC Unit. Dating back to 1978, the award is part of the annual George C. Marshall ROTC Award Seminar held in Lexing- ton, Virginia at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI).The seminar was held last week. The seminar allowed cadets to participate in roundtable discussions on major national security issues. Speakers included the Army Chief of Staff, the Secretary of the Army and Department of Defense representatives. They spoke to cadets about current national security policies and discussed the expectations of junior officers and future leaders. More than 5,000 ROTC cadets will be commissioned as Army Officers this year, but only 272 were selected to receive the George C. Marshall Award and attend the semi- nar. Murphy is the son of Mark and Peggy Murphy of Red Bluff. He is a 2007 graduate of Mercy High School. Olive Pluck Mark your calendar for the First Annual Olive Pluck, from 4 to 8 p.m. on May 12 at Lucero Olive Oil, 2120 Loleta Ave., in Corning. Come and enjoy free olive oil tasting and mill tours. Mark was one of the Red Bluff Bull Sale graders this year, and grandfather Floyd Bidwell was a Hereford consignor of two bulls in 1943 at the first sale. Pigs Arrive For Contest At Dairyville A shipment of 16 registered Hampshire pigs was received at Red Bluff last evening by Farm Advisor E.W. Curtis. These pigs are going to the boys and girls of the Dairyville Farm Center who are in the Pig Club Contest. Place beef steak and 1/4 cup marinade in food safe plastic bag; turn steak to coat. Close bag securely and marinate in refrigerator 6 hours or as long as overnight. Officers Red Bluff Emblem club elected two officers to fill vacancies. They are Terry Kincaid, recording secretary, and Linnea Fletcher, trustee. In April the club had a booth at the chili cookoff and treated children to an Easter egg hunt. the Red Bluff Elks lodge in the Relay for Life May 21 and 22. They are plan- ning a special spaghetti dinner on Tuesday, May 31, to fulfil their pledge to provide funds to keep the "Not Forgotten" memorial flag flying on Main and Pine streets. Luncheon Mary Jayne Eidman of Discover Earth in Red Bluff will be presenting the program when the ladies of Wilcox Oaks hold their final luncheon meeting until fall. The luncheon meeting will be on May 10. Nancy Robison and Judy Isola will be in charge of the luncheon. The social time begins at 11:30 a.m. fol- lowed by lunch at noon.
