Miranda and her 12-year-old son are not allowed to go out after dark. If they go out dur- ing the day, ‘‘Biff’’ calls repeatedly on their cell phones. My nephew cannot go anywhere with- out one of his parents. Biff drives him to and from school because he is not allowed to ride the school bus. He cannot go on school trips unless Biff accompanies him. They can’t do anything without Biff’s permission. Miranda is afraid to leave because Biff has threatened to kill her if she does. My nephew began having panic attacks a few years ago. My sister was taking him to a counselor who put him on medica- tion, and he got better. Then his father said he couldn’t do that, either. Now the panic attacks have gotten worse. I gave my cell phone number to my nephew and told him to call me any- time he needs me. I feel as if I’m waiting for some- thing terrible to happen. The phone was given to him for business purposes only, but he gives out that number instead of our home phone. It makes me feel like he is hiding some- thing. The other day I got a call from one of his co- workers’ wives. She told me to check my husband’s phone and see the kind of messages he is accepting from his work buddies. Sure enough, there were filthy comments along with pictures of slutty women, partially clothed, in different sexual posi- tions. As far as I know, he hasn’t sent these e-mails to anyone else. Do you think he’s afraid to tell these guys to stop sending him porn? Isn’t it unlawful to send such things? Dear Annie: I laughed out loud at the letter from ‘‘Proud Parent,’’ the single father whose family was upset that he shares the bathroom with his 16- year-old son. I am the single mother of two boys, 16 and 13. We live in a small apart- ment with one bathroom. In the morning, we all get ready at the same time. My boys know that if the door is closed, they have to knock, but otherwise, the 16-year-old is some- times in the shower while his brother brushes his teeth and I’m applying makeup. There is nothing unnatural, unhealthy or disturbing about it. We all know when privacy is needed. His family is making a big deal about nothing. And you can’t make somebody gay by sharing bathroom space. — Proud Mom of Two in NY DEAR DR. GOTT: I have noticed that a lot of people write to you about cold sores. Valtrex works to totally inhibit them. I have suffered from cold sores since the age of 4. When I was in my early 30s, the virus got out of hand and I was getting cold sores on a monthly basis. My dermatologist suggested I try 500 milligrams of Valtrex daily, and my cold sores com- pletely stopped. I’ve had two cold sores in the 15 years since, both times after stopping the medication for about two to three weeks to see if I still needed it. My mother and brother also use Valtrex but on an “as needed” basis. They take it when they feel the tingling that comes before the sore. They take two 500-milligram tablets when they feel that tingle and then one 500-mil- ligram tablet once a day for a week after that. Please tell your readers about this remedy. DEAR DR. GOTT: Cold-sore out- breaks can be triggered by foods high in arginine, such as peanuts or peanut but- ter. Eliminating those foods or increasing L-lysine intake can help. DEAR DR. GOTT: I would like to share a simple home remedy for cold sores. Simply take a red match, dampen it with water and then put it on the cold sore and hold it there for a few seconds. It may sting, but that is simply the sulfur doing its work. If you can catch it as soon as the sore starts, it’ll never fully develop. Both my grandkids, ages 6 and 7, have used it successfully. DEAR DR. GOTT: For years, I was plagued with cold sores. I suffered with them in and around my mouth. I discov- ered that eating raw onions (which I did- n’t like growing up so never ate them) both cured them when I had one and pre- vented them from occurring. For the past 30 years, whenever one starts, I add onions to my salad or ham- burger and away they go. I still don’t like them, but I tolerate them. I hope this helps other suf- ferers. Dr. Peter Gott DEAR READERS: Cold sores (also known as fever blis- ters or herpes simplex 1) are painful, fluid-filled lesions. Most commonly they occur on the lips. Less commonly, they can appear in the nostrils or on the chin or fingers. Rarely, they may occur inside the mouth. Cold sores are not the same as canker sores (painful, shallow, white or yellow ulcers), which occur only in the mouth but are not the result of the herpes virus. Valtrex is a prescription antiviral med- ication. In most instances, when I answer letters about cold sores, I do not recom- mend prescription medications, primari- ly because many people avoid them. Instead, I am most often asked to provide home remedies or alternative remedies for this common malady. However, for severe cases, such as yours, Valtrex may be the most beneficial and effective treat- ment. L-lysine is one of the most common home remedies used for the treatment, and sometimes for prevention of cold sores. L-arginine is known to trigger the herpes virus in some individuals. As for the match and onions, I’m not sure why they work but I cannot see any harm in trying, either. Dr. Peter H.
