Now imagine how difficult it must have been for our founding members to spread the word about Sigma Kappa without any of these modern conveniences. Despite not having these helpful tools, they created a legacy that has lasted 139 years! Our founders were able to create a sisterhood that has stood the test of time because they believed in our organization's ideals and worked together. They understood the value of each woman doing her part to ensure their goals were accomplished. The same sentiment holds true today: we need every alumna to do what she can to further the amazing legacy our founders created. Last fall, 29 sisters embodied this ideal and collectively committed $1,920. This summer, we hope to further improve our home by accomplishing the following projects: • Provide new furnishings in the formal living room • Update the lighting in the formal living room • Reupholster the bean to preserve an important piece of chapter history Beta Sigma has grown from a handful of founders to more than 1,300 women! if we pull together, and every alumna contributes what she is able, we could achieve our summer goals—and so much more. We ask that you embody the spirit of our founding sisters and send a gift today in the envelope included. With conveniences such as text messaging, Facebook, Skype and e-mail, it's easier than ever for us to promote the legacy of Sigma Kappa. We ask that you connect with a sister today and join with us in continuing the great tradition of Beta Sigma. Send your gift of $100 today to help us achieve our summer projects and so much more! Sigma Kappa Founders Create Lasting Legacy Continue the Tradition of Beta Sigma T Remembering Mom G, Former Beta Sigma House Mother M artha Gross, who was house mother at Beta Sigma from 1970 to 1980 and remained a force in many Sigma's lives, passed away on December 8, 2013. Mom G was about five weeks shy of her 100th birthday. Martha was as sharp as ever right up to her death, remembering everything that had happened, on top of current events, and of course, telling jokes. She was a resident of Carmel, Indiana, living close to her adopted family; Chi Omega House Mother Helen McCarthy's daughter, Julia Williams. A few years ago her hip broke causing her to fall while she was standing at the stove making lunch. Until then, she had lived independently—driving, playing bridge, and having the fun that only Martha could have. She lived in Crawfordsville after leaving Purdue, initially living with Alpha Delta Pi House Mother Laurene Buxton, who died some time ago. I am so sorry to share this news. I was hoping to share photos from her 100th birthday celebration instead. In lieu of flowers, Martha requested donations be made to your favorite charity. If you remember Mom G consider making a donation to Sigma Kappa in her name. betsy liley '83 (765) 418-6151 betsyliley@gmail.com
