Friday, April 22, 2011 – Daily News – 5A Education in Tehama County KEEP ON LEARNING School receives achievement award The California Department of Education has named Los Molinos Ele- mentary as a 2011 California Title I High Achieving School. This is the third time the school has received this distinction since 2005. The school is invited to Anaheim May 20 to accept this prestigious award from State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson. The school is one of 209 in the state to be honored for its high academic achievement. With more than 5,700 elementary schools in California, it puts LME in the top 4 percent. Cheryl Clark, English Language Development teacher, credits the dedica- tion of teachers and staff. “It’s the right time to recognize teachers and staff who have worked so hard for so long merely because it was the best thing for their students,” Clark said. “If it benefits students, we do it regardless of any extra commitment nec- essary.” LME has increased its API score 118 points to 828 since 2005 and was one of four presenting schools at the conference in Asilomar in February. “You won’t find a more committed staff than here at LME,” said Princi- pal Jerry Walker. “Our teachers are not only setting students up for academ- ic success, but they are setting students up for life success. It’s so much more than just high test scores and an amazing thing to see every day.” Courtesy photo The Red Bluff Elks Lodge 1250 honored local high school Students of the Quarter on April 5 with a check and certificate of recognition The following students, from left, were honored for their outstanding achievements: Sabrina Sanchez, senior, Salisbury High; Jonathan Able, sophomore, Centennial High; Sarah Thurman, senior, Corning High; Rebecca Gasman, senior, Mercy High; Adrian Hernandez-Castaneda, senior, Los Molinos High; and Christopher White, senior, Red Bluff High. State preschools see impressive reviews Dr. Joseph Martinez of California Department of Education’s Child Devel- opment Division recently visited several of Tehama County’s State Preschool sites to conduct a review of the program, which is operated by the Tehama County Department of Education. “Overall, the staff is trained to a high level of knowledge about chil- dren’s literacy and lan- guage development,” Martinez said in his report. “The administra- tors and staff make a con- certed effort to provide for the learning needs of their children. Their sup- port for the program and for training is quite impressive.” “We’re very pleased with Dr. Martinez’s report,” said Program Director Michele Eggert. “Our program serves about 350 children per year in Tehama County and its success is due in large part to our very talented and dedicated team of early childhood educators. That, coupled with the support that we get from our col- leagues and administrators at TCDE has really helped this program to grow and be successful. S. Department of Education in past years, said Larry Champion, superinten- dent of schools. These grants were the first awarded to California. As a result, we have excep- tionally highly skilled staff who administers and works in our programs.
