Residing in the social room (now the library) for many years, it seems to have found a permanent place of honor in the east end of the living room. It's been played by many Deltas and their guests for many events, including recruitment, entertainment, and just for fun. Do you recall ever perching on the bench and playing a tune? Our beautiful piano was built by the Vose & Sons Piano Company in Boston, Massachusetts, one of the best-known names in the industry and known for high quality. It has an interesting history, which is told to us in a note written in 1989 by Jennie Matson Haymaker '38 in response to an inquiry from Nell Quinlan, Colorado State '20, regarding the piano's origin. Jennie wrote: "My parents lived in Dwight, Kansas, and had purchased the piano in Kansas City around 1927-28. It cost about $2,000 at that time, which was a lot of money. I remember my mother saying years later that the Vose Company went out of busi- ness because they were making pianos out of such good materials they went broke. My mother was an excellent pianist and thought the Vose better than the Steinway." In 1953, Jennie's mother sold her home in Dwight and built a smaller one with no room for the piano. Since Jennie and her family were in the process of moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota, but hadn't yet purchased a home there, they didn't have a place for the grand piano. The family decided to trade it in for a smaller console at Salisbury's Music Store. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Salisbury sold the piano to Theta Iota, price unknown. The piano has an internal humidity control system and is considered a work horse: extremely well built and enduring of the test of time. Indeed, after sharing space for 60 years with over 2,000 collegians, our Vose piano is all that and more—a treasured piece of Theta Iota history. T Academic Success Leads to a Strong and Busy Spring Semester The year has been an eventful one for the Theta Iota Chapter at Kansas State University. We started off with a great recruitment in August, initiating 54 beautiful young women into Delta Delta Delta. We couldn't have been luckier to have them. This spring, we decided to do continuous open bidding and had four eager and excited women join the Delta family. These women have been a blessing and a great addition to our chapter. Our new members helped us surpass our academic goal of reaching an all-chapter GPA for the fall semester of 3.3. We had 27 members earn a 4.0, which we are very proud of. We've increased our GPA goal for this spring to a 3.45. As a chapter, we have developed a set of goals for this semester: • Achieve a 3.45 GPA. • Revamp our website and have it up and running before recruitment. • Create a strong leadership team that will continue to inspire and better the chapter, and hopefully encourage more upperclassman to apply for offices. • Have three events with Greek chapters that we haven't done events with in the past. • Lower our out-of-house bills by $200. We have a packed-full April this year, with our formal coming up first. Our formal is going to be Great Gatsby-themed or the roaring '20s, which the members are quite excited for. We have initiation for our four new members in the middle of April, and then at the end of the month we have one of our biggest philanthropy events, a block party to raise money for St. Jude. We are paired with Lambda Chi Alpha this year. In the past, this event has been huge success because of the support from our Greek and Manhattan communities. Theta Iota has had a successful semester so far, and hopes to continue that success into the next semester. Our success would not have been possible without the love and hard work of each and every woman who is part of the Theta Iota Chapter. I am unbelievably proud to be a Tri Delta and to be the president of Theta Iota Chapter. I have learned from and been changed for the better by each and every one of these women.
