Y 2 The Golden Crescent Stepping Back in Time: Theta Iota Success and Growth (Continued from page 1) Charter member Ivy Fuller Olds '15 (fourth from the left) looks over the blueprints for the new addition to the Tri Delta house. Let us know if you can name any of the ladies in this photo. Sisters help shovel snow during the record snow that hit Manhattan in 1960. A hand-painted scrapbook page made by the class of 1954. engagements were announced by the passing of chocolates and usually a serenade by the gentleman's fraternity. In November 1959, romance was a topic that even earned a feature article in the Kansas State Collegian. It noted: "Out of around 400 girls living in the sorority houses, 235 are not going steady, are not pinned or engaged." Heading the list with the most girls engaged was Delta Delta Delta sorority. The following spring the Collegian reported that 18 members at Tri Delta were "available." The Collegian has most certainly evolved since then! Just having fun together has always been a popular pastime for Theta Iota members. In 1960, Manhattan received 39 inches of snow, the most recorded to date by the Kansas State weather station. Records do not report cancellation of classes, but we can be sure that the collegians enjoyed being outdoors that winter. That year, Theta Iota's Fathers' Weekend included Saturday lunch, card playing and bowling, catching the KSU-Nebraska game, dancing at the local Skyline Club, and a midnight spread back at the house that featured skits by the Deltas. Hosting spreads for Dads' and Moms' Weekends and following in-house ceremonies was a tradition that would continue for many years. In the early 1960s, the number of K-State collegians desiring to join a sorority was rapidly on the rise. Accordingly, the campus Panhellenic Office determined that each sorority house could house 60 girls, and several other chapters on campus would soon be making those provisions. The Theta Iota House Corporation decided that a new addition to the house was the only plausible response. The projected cost was $200,000, which would require some alumnae solicitation for funds. An architect was hired and plans were made for the building of the three-story addition plus air conditioning for the entire house. Just prior to this campaign, the dining room had been enlarged by removing the wall between it and the library (now the paneled portion of the dining room), the kitchen remodeled, and the house next door to the east had been purchased and razed in preparation for the new addition and parking lot. By 1963, Tri Deltas were moving into the new addition, which was complete with bedrooms, bathrooms, and a new recreation room featuring a fireplace and kitchenette. Looking forward to their upcoming 50th anniversary in 1965, Theta Iota was indeed ready for the impending growth and milestone celebration.
