The cook-off, which is sanctioned by the International Chili Society, pitted cooks against each other in three categories: Red Chili, Chili Verde and Salsa. Area businesses, nonprofit organizations and others put their best recipes to the test as well, competing in the People's Choice category. At the state of Jefferson booth, Nancy Fordier and John Ward served up what they called Double Cross Chili, a name taken from the familiar Xs seen on the green T- shirts worn by supporters of the separatist movement. The chili, de - scribed as meaty and moderately mild, drew in passers-by, who also asked questions about the possibil- ity of a 51st state. Michelle Blunkall, co-chair- woman of the cook-off with Travis Dolling, said the 31 People's Choice Round-up 80 DEGREES AND CHILI Annual cook-off marks beginning of Round-Up week ANDRE BYIK — DAILY NEWS State of Jefferson supporters John Ward, le, and Nancy Fordier, middle, serve their moderately mild and meaty Double Cross Chili to passers-by Saturday at the Red Bluff Round-Up Regional Chili Cook-Off in the downtown area. A fundraiser for the K-9 pro- grams at the Red Bluff Police De- partment and the Tehama County Sheriff's Department will be held as part of the Red Bluff Round-Up activities 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, and lo - cal top cops are scheduled to take a biting. A barbecue dinner will be served at the Pauline Davis Pa - vilion with the Budweiser Clydes- dales on hand. For a $10 donation, people can enjoy the meal, take a picture with one of the Clydes- dales and then enjoy the first ever "celebrity biting." Chief Paul Nanfito and Sheriff Dave Hencratt will don bite suits – the protective, padded clothing worn by trainers of K-9 dogs — and then the K-9's handlers will in - struct them to bite the two. "It's a fun stunt," said Red Bluff Capt. Kyle Sanders, to add to the fundraiser and show the pub - lic. "When (the dog) is given the command by his handler, he'll do exactly what his handler com- mands." Sanders oversees the police de- partment's K-9 program. "I'm definitely looking forward to it because it's not too often one of our officers gets to attack his own boss," Sanders said. The Red Bluff Police Depart - ment has one dog in its K-9 pro- gram, a 4-year-old German shep- herd named Many, whose handler is Cpl. Mike Brown. This celeb- rity biting is a unique opportu- nity, Sanders says. "I have to think that his han- dler might be getting a little joy out of this assignment," Sanders said. This is the second year for the fundraiser, and money raised will go to both departments and be used for equipment, veterinary supplies and trainings for the dogs and handlers. "It supplements our budget," Hencratt said. "We don't have a line item in our budget for the K-9 fundRAiSeR Event to feature 'celebrity biting' Health..............A4 Sports..............
