RODEO 90th Red Bluff Round-Up By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor In a weekend full of elite talent, it took a little something extra to grab a buckle at the 90th Red Bluff Round- Up. Bobby Mote showed why he’s the two-time defending world champion in bareback riding posting an 84, Sunday, on the event’s last ride to force a first place tie with Steven Peebles. The Round-Up’s third round, Sun- day, was filled with grand champions, who pushed each other within hun- dredths of a second in some cases. Rodeo’s biggest star, 14-time world champion Trevor Brazile pushed the pace in tie-down roping when he put up a 7.7-second time on his last head to take the aggregate lead at 17 seconds flat. But that just pushed his competitors even further. Clint Robinson toppled Brazile’s time with an 8.4 on his second head for a combined time of 16.7 seconds. The last competitor, Matt Shiozawa, came into Sunday’s second go-around with the lead at 7.4 seconds on his first head and did enough on his second go- around with an 8.5-second time to take the Round-Up buckle at 15.9 seconds. Defending Round-Up champion Tyson Durfey finished fourth at 17.3 seconds followed by Wes Lockard at 17.5 seconds as the Top 5 finishers all came from Sunday. The only other champion to come from a Sunday performance was in barrel racing, where the riders took advantage of a short rain shower that produced a quick track to overtake Lindsay Sears’ 35.10-second com- bined time coming into the day. In as close of an event as possible, Christina Richman’s was first at 35.07 seconds, followed by Kaci Shaffer at 35.08, Lee Ann Rust in third at 35.09 and Sears in fourth with her 35.10. Brenday Mays, another Sunday rider, finished in fifth at 35.14. All of the other event leaders from Friday and Saturday’s performances held through the final day. One of the more impressive perfor- mances came from steer wrestler the six-foot, seven-inch Jake Rinehart, who had a combined time of 8.4 sec- onds on two head.
