Monday, April 18, 2011 – Daily News – 3B Kids' Krafts: Duct tape creates purse for spring (MCT) — Recently, those of us living in the northern hemisphere experienced the March equinox, meaning the days and nights were almost the same number of hours and minutes in length. Twice each year, on March 20 or 21, and Sept. 21 or 22, the sun shines most directly on the equa- tor, making the day and night equally 12 hours in almost every part of the world. Here, the March or ver- nal equinox means the start of spring. But in Manangatang, a small town in northwest Victo- ria, Australia, where they just experienced the autumnal equinox, my 16- year-old friend Hannah is getting ready for the cool- er weather of fall to begin. Hannah will be starting her senior year next Feb- ruary at Manangatang P- 12 College. You can celebrate spring by making a purse out of pastel Duck Brand duct tape. Decorate your bag with a silk flower, if you like. I found video instructions at http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=A1u8J5hEj9I. Supplies you will need: — Duck Brand duct tape in two pastel colors. — Scissors. ping the edges. Trim the edges to make the structure for your bag. Seal the short sides of the piece with a piece of tape about the same length. Tear the piece in half and cover the short side edges to cover any sticky places. Trim excess. Fold the piece in half creating a pouch. In the same way you covered the top edges, tear off a piece of tape about the length of the sides then tear it in half. Connect the sides by placing the tape on one side of the pouch and folding it over to the back side. Do the same on the opposite edge. Trim away excess. To make a braided han- dle, tear three strips of tape about 18-inches in length. Fold each piece length-wise, in on itself, covering all the sticky sides of the tape. After you have three straps, lay them flat and wrap a piece of tape around the ends to hold them together. Braid the three straps together and secure with tape. Tape each end to the inside of the purse. Decorate by taping on a silk flower, if you like, or make a geometric pat- tern on the purse with more tape.
