By Andre Byik sports@redbluffdailynews.com @TehamaSports on Twitter The winter season in Tehama County wasn't short on hot performances from area athletes. After Corning High School basket- ball forward Michael Shoemaker and Mercy High School post player Jessica Curl earned the male and female Daily News Athletes of the Winter Season respectively, here's a look at other notable performers. Boys Soccer No one in Northern Section CIF Divi- sion III last season embodied dominance like Los Molinos High's Jose Gonzales. The sophomore striker found the back of the net 47 times, topping the section. His total, which included 14 goals in the Bulldogs' sea - son opener against Biggs, was more than double the amount of the next highest goal scorer. Los Molinos went on to tally an over- all record of 11-4-1, and reached the semifi- nal round of the section playoffs before fall- ing to Willows. In Corning, a turbulent season filled with injuries didn't stop the Cardinals from win- ning a Northern Athletic League title with a 9-0-1 league record. Senior captain Mario Campos led the Cards in goals with 15, fol- lowed by Eric Figueroa's 14 goals and Cris- tian Loera's 13. Luis Luevano led Corning in saves with 79. The Cards earned the top seed in the Northern Section CIF Division II play- offs, but fell in the semifinal round to a peak- ing Gridley team. Girls Soccer The Red Bluff Lady Spartans may have had a down season on the pitch, but junior midfielder Mikenna Cory put in strong ef- forts for her team, scoring 12 goals and four assists on the season. Red Bluff finished with an overall record of 6-9-4. The Lady Cardinals reached the quarter - final round of the Northern Section CIF Divi- sion II playoffs, and got there by committee. Fourteen players recorded goals for Corn- ing, and Anissa Munoz and Ana Carrillo led the way with six goals apiece. Kaitlyn Hunt- ley had a busy season at goalkeeper, notching 216 saves. The Cards finished with an over- all record of 8-12-1. Wrestling The Cardinals' freshman Gavin Nye, after finishing third at the NSCIF Masters Wres- tling Championships with a 5-2 record, went on the compete in the state championships in Bakersfield. Nye was the sole state repre- sentative for the Cards, who placed fifth as a team at the section championships. Red Bluff High's Christian Shaffer was a bright spot for the Spartans, consistently performing well on the mat and finishing a league and Northern Section CIF Division I champion in the 197-pound weight class. Shaffer narrowly missed a chance to com - pete in the state championships after finish- ing fourth at Masters. Alpine The lack of snowfall in the north state forced area snowboard and ski teams to travel to Oregon to complete a season's worth of races in February. Red Bluff High's lady snowboarders did especially well on the snow, sweeping league. Among those snow - boarders, Madeleine Walton and Zoe Treat led the pack in points. Treat, at the California Nevada Interscho- lastic Ski and Snowboard Federation Cham- pionships in Northstar at Tahoe Resort in March, turned in the Lady Spartans' best finish. She placed ninth in the snowboard slalom. Cross Country On the girls side, Red Bluff High's Naomi Renfroe notched a time of 12:55 in the 1.9- mile run at the Sac River League Champi- onships in November. It was the fifth-fast- est time in the Northern Section last year. On the boys side, Corning High's Rogelio Silva's 16:37.23 in the 3-mile run at the NSCIF Cross Country Championships was good for sixth place. His fastest time in the 3-mile run last year, however, came in the Bill Spring - horn Classic in September. His time of 15:41.1 was the seventh-fastest recorded time in the section last year. Basketball The Lady Spartans, who were riddled with injuries near the end of their season, achieved something they hadn't done since 1993: reach the championship round of the section playoffs. Red Bluff, as a No. 3 seed, defeated Foot - hill and then upset No. 2 Shasta in the semi- final round. The Spartans fell to Enterprise in the Northern Section CIF Division III title game at Shasta College in March.
