An Australian air force P-3 Orion, which has been dropping sonar buoys into the water near where four sounds were heard earlier, picked up a "possible sig - nal" that may be from a man- made source, said Angus Houston, who is coordinat- ing the search for Flight 370 off Australia's west coast. The latest acoustic data would be analyzed, he said. If confirmed, the signal would further narrow the hunt for the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777, which vanished March 8 while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people aboard. The Australian ship Ocean Shield, which is towing a U.S. Navy device to detect signal beacons from a plane's flight data and cockpit voice re - corders, picked up two un- derwater sounds Tuesday. Two sounds it detected Sat- urday were determined to be consistent with the pings emitted from the flight re- corders, or "black boxes." The searchers are trying to pinpoint the location of the source of the underwater sig - nals so they can send down a robotic submersible to look for wreckage and the flight recorders from the jet. The sonar buoys are be - ing dropped by the Austra- lian air force to maximize the sound-detectors operat- ing in the search zone. Royal Australian Navy Commo- dore Peter Leavy said each buoy is dangling a hydro- phone listening device about 1,000 feet below the surface and transmits its data via ra- dio back to a search plane. By David Bauder The Associated Press NEW yORK » CBS moved swiftly Thursday to re- place the retiring David Letterman with Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert, who will take over the "Late Show" next year and do bat - tle with Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel for late- night television supremacy. Colbert, 49, has been hosting "The Colbert Re - port" at 11:30 p.m. ET since 2005, in character as a fic- tional conservative talk- show host. The character will retire with "The Col- bert Report." "Simply being a guest on David Letterman's show has been a highlight of my ca - reer," Colbert said. "I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though ev- eryone in late night follows Dave's lead." Letterman, who turns 67 on Saturday, announced on his show last week that he would retire sometime in 2015, although he hasn't set a date. CBS said Thursday that creative elements of Colbert's new show, includ - ing where it will be based, will be announced later. Mayors of New York and Los Angeles have already publicly urged the new "Late Show" host to choose their city. New York would appear to have the clear edge, since Colbert is al - ready based in New York and CBS owns the Ed Sul- livan Theater, where the "Late Show" has been taped since Letterman took over in 1993. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo added his voice to the mix, calling on CBS to keep "Late Show" in place and lauding the contribu - tions of such programs to the state's economy. Letterman offered his endorsement for Colbert's selection Thursday. "Ste - phen has always been a real friend to me," he said. "I'm very excited for him, and I'm flattered that CBS chose him. I also happen to know they wanted another guy with glasses." It's a rapidly changing period for that time slot.
