Courtesy photo Special to the DN Los Molinos Unified School District Super- intendent Charles Ward was recently asked to present to more than 800 school leaders at the annual Curriculum and Instruction Leadership Symposium. Ward was part of a larger panel, which included high profile names such as Dr. Michael Fullan and Dr. Douglas Reeves, who are recognized as being worldwide authorities on educational reform as well as Marc Johnson, who was named National Superintendent of the Year. Also presenting at the conference was State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson. The topic: Leadership strategies that drive positive change in the K-12 education system. Ward’s own district has defied the odds with regard to student achievement; part of the crite- ria in selecting him to present at the conference. The district’s student population is nearly 80 percent socioeconomically disadvantaged, yet their API score (Academic Performance Index) is among the highest in Tehama County and their students are testing above the California average in all categories. How do they do it? Ward attributes the dis- trict’s successes to several factors. “This didn’t happen overnight,” he said. “We’ve committed to focusing on the standards and have worked hard to create a climate that supports positive reform. In addition to what we’re doing in our district, we’ve also identi- fied the state preschool program as a contribu- tor to student success, which helps students to start kindergarten prepared to learn and suc- ceed.” “I am thankful for our Board of Trustees, and most importantly, our teachers and instruction- al aides who have been willing to trust, to strive, and to believe,” he said. “The coordinated efforts of these individuals have helped us to bring about deep, systemic change in our dis- trict.” The students are seeing the tremendous ben- efits of these efforts. The success in Los Moli- nos is proof that every student, no matter what their background, can succeed.
