Associated Press PERTH, AusTRAliA » Af- ter a navy ship heard more signals from deep in the In- dian Ocean, the head of the search for the missing Ma- laysian jetliner said Wednes- day he believes the hunt is closing in on the "final rest- ing place" of Flight 370. The Australian vessel Ocean Shield picked up two signals Tuesday, and an analysis of two other sounds detected Saturday showed they were consistent with a plane's flight recorders, or "black boxes," said Angus Houston, the Australian offi - cial coordinating the search for the Malaysian Airlines jet. "I'm now optimistic that we will find the aircraft, or what is left of the aircraft, in the not-too-distant fu - ture," Houston said. "But we haven't found it yet, be- cause this is a very challeng- ing business." Finding the f light data and cockpit voice record- ers soon is important be- cause their locator beacons have a battery life of about a month, and Tuesday marked one month since Flight 370 vanished March 8 en route from Kuala Lumpur, Malay- sia, to Beijing with 239 peo- ple aboard. If the batteries fail before the recorders are located, finding them in such deep water — about 4,500 me - ters, or 15,000 feet — would be difficult, if not impossible. "I believe we are search- ing in the right area, but we need to visually identify air- craft wreckage before we can confirm with certainty that this is the final rest- ing place of MH370," Hous- ton said. "For the sake of the 239 families, this is ab- solutely imperative." The hope expressed by Houston contrasted with the frustrating monthlong search for the Boeing 777, which disappeared shortly after takeoff in one of the biggest mysteries in aviation history. The plane veered off-course for an unknown reason, with officials saying that satellite data indicates it went down in the southern Indian Ocean off the coast of western Australia. The black boxes could help solve that mystery. The signals detected 1,020 miles northwest of Perth by the Ocean Shield's towed ping locators are the stron - gest indication yet that the plane crashed and is now at the bottom of the ocean in the area where the search is now focused. A data analysis of the sig - nals heard Saturday deter- mined they were distinct, man-made and pulsed con- sistently, Houston said. "They believe the signals to be consistent with the specification and description of a flight data recorder," he said. mAlAysiAn jETlinER Mo re ' pi ng s' r ai se h op es F li gh t 37 0 wi ll b e fo un d AssociAted Press in this Wednesday photo provided by the Australian defense Force, a royal Australian Air Force AP-3c orion flies past Australian defense vessel ocean shield on a mission to drop sonar buoys to assist in the acoustic search of the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 in the southern indian ocean. An area of high pressure will deliver at least partial sunshine and near- to above-average temperatures from the Deep South to New Eng- land. An advancing cool front will produce a swath of clouds, showers and spotty thunderstorms from Missouri and Kansas to Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin. The air behind the front over the northern Plains is of Pacific origin and not tremendously cool. Dry weather, sunshine and warmth are in the offing for much of the West.
