SECRET WITNESS 529-1268 A program of Tehama County Neighborhood Watch Program, Inc. Setting it straight There was an error in Tuesday’s front page story “Idaho man thrown off motorcycle, injured.” The article should have stated Ned Hodges was not wear- ing his helmet. An item in Wednesday’s edition about a memori- al service for Wanda Pridemore contained an error. Organizers ask that guests not bring food to the event. The Daily News regrets the error. –––––––– It is the policy of the Daily News to correct as quickly as possible all errors in fact that have been published in the newspaper. If you feel a factual error has been made in a news story, call the news department at 527-2153. Red Bluff Fire Department Know what’s below, call before you dig. It is easy and it is free! April is National Safe Digging Month. Yes, there seems to be a day, week or month set aside for every special cause or event you can think of. So why designate an “official month” to promote safe digging practices? I’ll tell you why. Every year we hear of emergen- cies created by someone acciden- tally digging up gas or other utility lines, sometimes with deadly results. Here in Red Bluff your Fire Department responds each year to incidents where gas lines are ruptured by a backhoe, post- hole digger, or shovel. We have already had this year’s first natural gas leak of the season caused by heavy equipment. Luckily it was minor. But even these minor leaks have potential to cause fire or injury. Gas leaks also tie up our limited fire fighting resources, sometimes for hours, until the util- ity company can arrive with adequate resources to shut down the gas flow to the area of the leak. Spring is here, and along with spring comes home improve- ment projects. Building a deck? Planting a tree? Putting in sprinklers? A national survey revealed that about half of Americans are “active diggers” who have done (or are planning to do) some type of digging project at home. Yet only one third of those diggers will call to get their utili- ties marked. And if problems arise from ruptured utility lines, the dig- ger may be held liable if they did not call USA North in advance. Whether you are a do-it-your- selfer or a professional contractor, call 811 at least two days before doing any digging. 811 is a new federally mandated FCC des- ignated toll-free num- ber that people can call to have utility companies come out and mark their under- ground lines on your property for free. So call 811 or you may be calling 911. Then after your util- ities are marked, go ahead with those spring projects you have been putting off all winter. From the Firehouse runs on Fridays.
