SOFTBALL Orland 0 3 5 Red Bluff 10 9 2 By RICHGREENE DNSports Editor There was no last at bat game-tying homer or perfect game this time — just another win. The fifth in a row for a Lady Spar- tans team who improved to 12-2 with a workmanlike 10-0 mercy shortened six-inning win over Orland, Thursday. Freshmen Tayler Zazueta continued to progress and impress — leading Red Bluff with a 3-for-4 day at the plate and a trio of RBIs. Megan McColpin pitched five Masters 1st Round AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — The flair of Rory McIl- roy. The sheer power of Alvaro Quiros. These are but two of the fresh faces in golf who offered more evi- dence Thursday at the Mas- ters that a new generation is on the way. And that’s only going to make it tougher on Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. The 21-year-old McIl- roy, who opened with a 63 at St. Andrews last summer in the British Open, again delivered exquisite shots on one of golf’s biggest stages for a 7-under 65. It was such a clean round that he didn’t make a bogey and was left wondering how much lower he could have gone if not for missing five birdie chances inside 10 feet. ‘‘It wasn’t maybe as exclusive or spectacular as the 63 at St. Andrews,’’ he said. ‘‘But it was very solid from start to finish.’’ Then came Quiros, a 28- year-old Spaniard whom many consider the longest hitter in the game. Blasting away on a course where he had never shot better than 75, he spun an approach back to 3 feet on the 18th scoreless innings and Bryce Etzler pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning. The Lady Spartans struck for three runs in the first inning as once again Haley Harris got the job done from the leadoff position, ripping a double down the third base line. McColpin reached on a fielder’s choice play in which the Trojans didn’t get an out. Then an infield pop up off the bat of Brittney Fletcher landed safely to load the bases. Etzler grounded into a fielder’s choice to score Harris. Two batters later Zazueta singled to left field to bring in two more. Orland buckled down and held Red Bluff off the scoreboard again until the fifth inning. This time it was McColpin leading off with a double. Etzler drew a walk and Brooke Clatty knocked in a pair of runs with a single. Zazueta singled again and Clatty scored when the Orland outfield mis- played the ball. A couple of wild pitches would eventually lead to Zazueta coming home for the inning’s fourth run. Red Bluff went ahead and ended the game in the sixth inning. Bayli Johnson drew a walk to lead things off. McColpin reached on an error, leading to Brittney Fletcher hit- ting an RBI double. Etzler followed with an RBI single and Clatty walked to load the bases for Zazueta. Then the freshmen delivered again. They had a two-shot lead over a pair of South Kore- ans, former PGA champion Y.E. Yang and K.J. Choi. Mickelson and Woods, with six green jackets between them in the last decade, blended in more than they stood out. Woods played in the morning in only a moderate breeze, ideal conditions for scoring. But he lost his way starting the back nine with consecutive bogeys, made only one birdie on the par 5s and had to settle for a 71. ‘‘I would rather be where Rory’s at,’’ Woods said. ‘‘But, hey, it’s a long way to go. We have a long grind ahead of us. The tempera- ture is supposed to warm up and I’m sure they will start making the pins a little more difficult as the week goes on. I’m right there in the ballgame. I’m only six back, and as I said, we’ve got a lot of golf ahead of us.’’ Tehama Tracker 3200 meters and Katelin Collins won the long jump. Riley Kittle, Alana Hinkston, Jessie Slade and Erin Eicholtz won the 4x400 relay and the Lady Spartans also won the 4x100. TENNIS Anderson 1 Corning 8 The Cardinals won their fourth straight match, knocking off Anderson 8-1. Ryan Howell defeated Emmanuel Alcazar 6-1, 6-0. Durante Rodriguez han- dled Kameron Nuss 6-1, 6- 2. Erik Espinoza beat Zack Golden 6-2, 6-2. Javier Curiel swept Jose Manzo 6-0, 6-0 and Omar Diaz beat Antonio Arrianga 6-2, 6-4. Corning won all three doubles matches as Howell and Rodriguez beat Alcazar and Nuss 8-5. Espinoza and Curiel defeated Golden and Arri- anga 8-2. Robert Garcia returned form injury and teamed with Diaz to beat Manzo and Conner Crocket 8-3. GOLF EAL-South Match Day 2 The Spartans took a pair of second place finishes, Thursday, during the East- ern Athletic League-South’s Match Day 2 at Table Mountain. Daniel Frantz led Red Bluff with a 76, which was also good enough for the second lowest score overall. The Spartans got a big boost from Sean Collins, who shot a personal best 89. Collins had one chip in on the Front 9 and 8-putted the first nine holes. Peter Mitzel shot an 82 and Justin Martinson shot an 83. Owen Dahl shot 101 and Kyle Riley 103 to round out Red Bluff’s scoring. Hosts Oroville took first place on the Front and Back 9s to take a 16-12 lead over Red Bluff in the league standings. Mercy Warriors Mercy High School began its 2011 season March 14 at Bidwell Park Golf Course. See TT, page 2B Mickelson was far more erratic off the tee, hitting tee shots into the Georgia pines and spraying one so far into the azaleas left of the 13th fairway that he looked like he was on an Easter egg hunt as he searched for his ball. He hit only four fair- ways, last in the field of 99 players. Mickelson finished with a 70. The top Americans on the leaderboard were Matt Kuchar and Ricky Barnes at 68.
