Of course it keeps col- legians and staff comfortable, but it also prevents pipes from freezing and bursting and causing significant damage. When alum- nae visit the house, they always ask about the furnishings, but they rarely ask about the heat. It's just one of those things you don't think about until you don't have it. Throughout the last decade we've constantly had to do major repairs on the boilers, which provide all the heat to the house. For those who lived at 890 11th St. in the last 10 years, they are all too familiar with the extremely loud and disturbing clanging noise that came from the steam boiler at the north end. This is hardly a comforting noise for any home! For a multitude of reasons, replacing the boil- ers is something we've wanted to accomplish for a long time, and now thanks to our alum- nae's generous contributions to the capital campaign it's finally coming to fruition! By fall we will have a new heating system that is quiet and far more energy efficient. Most importantly, it has a centralized control system with three redundant boilers, ensuring that the house can almost never lose heat. The project began in summer 2012 when we removed the Volkswagen Beetle-sized boiler that had been decommissioned at some point in the last 20 years. This boiler was originally installed with the expansion in 1955. Then last summer we removed the functioning boiler, which was also Volkswagen Beetle-sized and from 1955, and replaced it with three new high-efficiency boilers that will support our plan to connect the north and south ends in the final phase of the renovation. Since the former boiler was a hot-water system this allowed us to reuse all the heat pipes in the south end and have perfectly functioning heat in this wing of the house. The north end pipes, however, require our attention. In order to utilize our new boilers we must replace the more than 60-year-old pipes in the north end. This is a very large project and we need your help! This upgrade is extremely necessary and beneficial — with proper main- tenance, this new high-efficiency, fully redun- dant heating system will last for another 50 years. Also, once complete, we will be able to shift our focus to the next (and final!) stages of the renovation. Your generous gifts have helped us so much to date, between the upgrades to the bedrooms and bathrooms to the flooding last fall, and we are so fortunate to have our Pi Phi angels on our side. We know you will see the importance of this project, too, and hope to count you among our list of supporters! Loyally, The Colorado Alpha Campaign Leadership Board P.S. Campaign gifts to Pi Beta Phi Foundation are always welcomed and encouraged, but only non-tax-deductible gifts to the Colorado House Corporation will go toward the boiler project.
