The iowa sTaTe phi 4 assigned a copy of her Mother Gesler Knows Best booklet to every rookie pledge. Both Mother Gesler and Mother Miller were special to Ken, which led to his honoring them with his investment in the Iowa Gamma capital campaign. Ken's involvement with Phi Delta Theta did not stop after graduation. After a four-year stint in California as a young architect engaged in a new University of California at Irvine, Ken and his wife, Judy, elected to return to Iowa in 1966 to raise their family and start a new architectural firm in Des Moines with an ISU classmate, Jim Wilkins. Two Phi Delt brothers in Des Moines, Bill Goodwin 666 and Bill Meek 685, have "always been there for me" when times were difficult in his personal life, such as losing Judy in 1999. Ken and Jim were able to survive the challenge of starting a new partnership in spite of having no clients, no office and no money to what will be a celebration of the 50th birthday of the Renaissance Design Group in 2016. To ensure lifelong relationships are continually made at Iowa Gamma, Ken has given over four decades of time, talent, and energy in creating a feeling of pride of place at two houses of Iowa Gamma at ISU. He deferred his investment in the capital campaign until he was convinced the 2014 phase of remodeling included funding to enhance the exterior of Phi Delta Theta house on Sunset. At the 100th anniversary last September, Ken was "very impressed with the quality of young men who were polite, bright, mature, and gracious and left me with a warm feeling that they too were Proud to be a Phi. Ken says he and his brother, larry Bussard 788, periodically reflect on their formative years at Iowa Gamma: "We would never trade our experiences in growing as a person, the lifetime friendships and learning to appreciate those who contributed to preparing us for the challenges in life." They are proud to be graduates of ISU and members of Iowa Gamma.
