Kennard Bussard, FAIA 703 has taken to heart the importance of being Proud to be a Phi. At age 77, Ken believes the Iowa Gamma relationships made in college have been extremely important since his years at Iowa State University, in both his career and personal life. Ken came to Iowa State University as a sophomore in the fall of 1956. He was one of the last to pledge as he wanted to be comfortable with his new home and family. The actives and pledge brothers were more important to him than the environs of the "old cracker box" on Welch Street. During his first year living at Phi Delta Theta, he came to admire the values and diversity of the personalities of the individual members. He enjoyed the "chemistry," commitment to taking care of each other, and the responsibility required in the respect and reputation of Phi Delta Theta on campus. While the academic load of being an architecture student in the College of Engineering was very rigorous, Ken still found time to enjoy fraternity life. He was blessed with both actives and pledge brothers who were mentors and tutors. One of Ken's wonderful memories was the planning and construction of VEISHEA floats and the reward of being sweepstake winners several times. He remembers the first year at Iowa Gamma required that pledges be responsible for the housemother's social calendar. He fondly remembers both Mother Gesler and Mother Miller. Mother Gesler was big on etiquette and manners. She Ken Bussard 703 proud to Be a phi (Continued on page 4)
