Connecticut defeats Butler for 3rd national title Butler 41 Connecticut 53 HOUSTON (AP) — The only thing that could stop Kemba Walker and Connecticut’s amaz- ing run was the final buzzer. On a night when the massive arena felt like a dusty old gym, UConn made Butler look like the underdog it really was, winning the national championship Mon- day night with an old-fashioned, grinding 53-41 beatdown of the Bulldogs. Walker finished with 16 points for the Huskies (32-9), who won their 11th straight game since closing the regular season with a 9-9 Big East record that foreshad- owed none of this. They closed it out with a defen- sive showing for the ages, holding Butler to a 12-for-64 shooting. That’s 18.8 percent, the worst ever in a title game, which made for an ugly overall night but turned into the kind of game a grizzled old coach like Jim Calhoun could love. At age 68, he became the oldest coach to win the NCAA champi- onship and joined John Wooden, Adolph Rupp, Mike Krzyzewski and Bob Knight as only the fifth coach to win three NCAA titles. ‘‘It may be the happiest moment of my life,’’ Calhoun said. Calhoun designed this win by accepting the reality that the rim was about as wide as a pancake on a defensive-minded night in Hous- ton, by making his players pound See UCONN, page 2B Hot Shots nab trophy in Redding Luppino, Conrad, Hinkston and Erin Eicholtz recorded a time of 4:21.78 in the 4x400. Giants set to meet up with 2010 rival Padres San Francisco Giants SAN DIEGO (AP) — Starting on opening day is nothing new for Aaron Harang, who drew the assignment the last five seasons with the Cincin- nati Reds. Starting the home opener for his hometown team? That’s a little different. Padres manager Bud Black and pitching coach Darren Balsley told the big right-hander during spring training that he’d be starting Tuesday against the San Francisco Giants. ‘‘I kind of got that little tingle in my gut like, ’Wow, this is pretty cool,’ ‘‘ Harang said Monday. ‘‘I get to open up in front of my hometown, my family and friends. It’s definitely an honor to get this opportunity.’’ Harang attended Patrick Henry High, just up the hill a bit from the Padres’ one-time home, Qual- comm Stadium, and then pitched at San Diego State.
