Iamalwaysoften educatedbythetips readersmailin. SAFELY FROZEN I am on a wait- ing list to get a safe deposit box at my bank. While I wait, I am keeping my important papers in a heavy freezer bag, in the deep freeze. In a fire, the inside of the freezer doesn't burn easily. -- Jill N., Florida ART SHOW I love to see the artwork my young boys bring home from school, but we can't keep all of it. I take pho - tos of each piece of artwork with my digital camera and put the pictures on my dig- ital photo frame at work. I can see their artwork all the time. -- Erin J. Illinois GREASE CUTTER I keep white vin- egar in a used de- tergent bottle by my kitchen sink. When I have some- thing greasy to wash, I squirt a small amount of vin- egar into the dish. This works wonders in containers that have had tomato sauce or some other tomato product in them. The vinegar quickly cuts the film of residue. -- Janet M., Florida Emailtomary@everyday - cheapskate.com,orwrite toEverydayCheapskate, P.O.Box2099,Cypress,CA 90630.Includeyourfirstand lastnameandstate.Mary Huntisthefounderofwww. EvEryday ChEapskatE Keep your important papers in the freezer By Jennifer Cooper Social Security Manager in Redding You've probably no- ticed the cold and stormy weather we've been expe- riencing this year. That makes it more appropriate than ever to recognize Na- tional Umbrella Month this March. National Umbrella Month is a time to celebrate a useful invention used by most everyone. It's no co- incidence that the month comes at the beginning of the rainy season. April showers may bring May flowers, but the rain starts pouring in March. When the rain pours, an umbrella has you covered. If you work and pay So - cial Security taxes, we have you covered too. Whether the storm that hits you un- expectedly is a disabil- ity, the loss of a loved one, or an unexpected early re- tirement (such things can sneak up on you like a sud- den storm), Social Secu- rity's umbrella of cover- age will keep you protected from the harsh weather. You qualify for Social Se- curity benefits by earning credits when you work in a job or are self-employed and pay Social Security payroll taxes. In 2014, you receive one credit for each $1,200 of earnings, up to the maximum of four cred - its per year. Most people need 10 years of work (40 credits) to be eligible for re- tirement benefits. The number of credits you need for disability ben- efits depends on how old you are when you become disabled. For example, if your dis - ability occurs before age 24, you generally need 1 years of work (six cred- its) in the three years be- fore you became disabled. At age 31 or older, you gen- erally need at least 20 cred- it s in th e 1 0 y ea rs im me - diately before you became disabled. In most cases, you need to have worked about 10 years for surviving fam - ily members to qualify for survivors benefits. Survi- vors of very young work- ers may be eligible if the deceased worker was em- ployed for 1 years during the three years before his or her death. Umbrellas have been around for thousands of years. Social Security has only been around since 1935. Yet the Social Secu - rity umbrella covers an ex- panded range of services for you and your family. When you need to learn more about disability, sur - vivors or retirement, the place to go is www.socialse- curity.gov. And you don't even have to grab your um- brella on your way to ap- ply—just do it online from the dry comfort of your own home or office com- puter. soCial sECurity Keeping you covered like an umbrella in stormy times Groups in Tehama County are working to- gether to improve aware- ness of hunger, physical ac- tivity and healthy eating in the community, includ- ing Healthy Tehama, Com- munity Food Alliance and the Food Share Coalition, Tehama Together and the Community Action Agency and Senior Nutrition Pro - gram. Senior Nutrition Program The Tehama County Se- nior Nutrition Program serves meals to home- bound seniors throughout Tehama County as well as hot lunches at the Red Bluff Community Center at noon and the Corning Senior Cen - ter at 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. Seniors are defined as 60 years or older. Homebound seniors are eli - gible for the program if they are 60 and no longer drive. Folks younger than 60 can bring a senior to lunch at the hot meal sites for a small do - nation to cover food costs. Simply make a reservation the day before you plan to eat. Call 527-2414. Community Food Alliance Volunteers in the county have created a food advo- cacy group called Commu- nity Food Alliance. This group meets regularly at the Tehama Together office in Red Bluff and is develop - ing strategies to work to- gether with farmers, neigh- bors and local agencies to improve food access and health in Tehama County. The group encourages peo - ple to get involved. More in- formation can be found at: http://tehamatogether.org. "Get Fresh" The Community Action Agency's Nutrition Educa- tion Program, "Get Fresh," provides information, re- sources and hands on activ- ities at workshops through- out Tehama County. This program focuses on the key messages of eating more highly nutritious, fresh and local food, and how it can be affordable. It also provides resources about the impor - tance of increased physical activity for better health and how to get active by gardening, walking or other low-cost activities. Healthy Tehama Healthy Tehama is a co- alition of Tehama County Public Health, Department of Aging, Tehama County Department of Social Ser - vices, University of Cali- fornia Nutrition Education Program, Northern Valley Catholic Social Services and Tehama County Com - munity Action Agency. Programs work together to further the fight against obesity, reduction of sugar- sweetened beverages, focus on healthy eating and access to healthy foods. Information can be found at http://www.tehamacoun - tycaa.org/index.php/pro- gramsservices/snap. Access to fresh and local foods at local farmers mar- kets is an important focus for Frontier Village Farm- ers Market.
