By Mike Schneider The Associated Press ORLANDO, FLA. » Fearing imminent arrest in a triple slaying, Ibragim Todashev started acting suspiciously. His mood, once cooperative with investigators, became agitated. His eyes darted around his small apartment, as if he were looking for a weapon or a way out. A s To d a s he v w r ot e ou t a st at em en t ab ou t hi s role in the 2011 slayings in Waltham, Mass., a state trooper sent an ominous text message: "Be on guard, he is in vulnerable position to do something bad. Be on guard now." Moments later, Todashev, a friend of one of the Bos - ton marathon bombing sus- pects, flipped a coffee table in the air, knocking down an FBI agent in the room and causing a gash on his head. Todashev then grabbed a broomstick or mop handle and charged toward the Massachusetts trooper, but the FBI agent shot Toda - shev several times, killing him, accord- ing to federal and state re- p o r t s r e - leased Tues- d a y t h a t cleared the agent of any charges. I n t h e Florida report, prosecu - tor Jeff Ashton noted To- dashev's experience as a mixed martial arts fighter. "The one common thread among all was the observa - tion that he was, at his core, a fearless fighter," Ashton said in a letter to FBI Direc- tor James Comey. "Perhaps on this occasion, he simply reverted to that basic as- pect of his personality and chose to go down fighting." Separately, the Justice Department filed its own report, echoing the Flor - ida findings. "To empha- size, these prosecutorial decisions were made in- dependent of the FBI," bu- reau spokesman Mike Kor- tan said. The shooting happened May 22, about a month af- ter the April 15 marathon bombings. Investigators were looking into the back- ground of bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed four days after the marathon in a shoot - out with police, when they learned of his friend, Toda- shev. Both were Chechen and trained together in Bos- ton. Tsarnaev was a heavy- weight boxer. It wasn't long before au- thorities focused on whether the men had any involve- ment in the Waltham kill- ings. In that case, three men were found in an apartment with their necks slit and their bodies reportedly cov - ered with marijuana. One of the victims was a boxer and Tsarnaev's friend. Winds can be strong enough to down tree limbs and cause power outages along the eastern coast of New England, while snow will taper off. Gusty winds will add to the chill as far south as coastal North Carolina. Temperatures will remain chilly under March sunshine after the day started with record-challenging cold from the Midwest to the South. Moisture is forecast to spread northward over Texas and the southern Plains on warm, southerly winds.
