Free Whiskeytown National Recreation Area park offi- cials announced recently the release of the Princess Ditch Trail Construction Environ- mental Assessment for pub- lic review. To assist the National Park Service with this proj- ect, the public is invited to provide comments dur- ing the review period, run- ning to April 18. The Envi- ronmental Assessment may also be downloaded and comments posted directly to the National Park Service Planning, Environment and Public Comment website at: parkplanning.nps.gov/Prin - cessDitchTrailConstructio- nEA. Copies of the document are available for viewing at Park Headquarters, the Park Visitor Center, and the Redding branch of Shasta Public Libraries. This EA evaluates the potential environmental im - pacts to NRA resources by the proposal to construct a new trail along the Prin- cess Ditch in the southeast- ern portion of the park. This new trail will provide public access from Whiskeytown National Recreation Area to a network of trails in the Swasey Recreation Area, which is administered by the Bureau of Land Man - agement. The EA contains an analy- sis of the impacts of both the proposed action and the no- action alternative. The Pro- posed Action Alternative is to construct the Princess Ditch Trail. The trail would allow the NPS to provide recreational opportunities in a part of the park where a water ditch once existed that would be stabilized for use as a trail. Around 1.9 miles of tr ai l wo ul d be c on st ru ct ed , most of which would occur along the framework of the Princess Ditch, a water-de - livery system built in the mid-19th century. To access this section of trail from the existing park trail network, approximately 0.5 miles of newly constructed trail would also be created. For the past two sum - mers, Alicia has taught writing classes in North- ern Uganda to students in- cluding orphans and for- mer child soldiers. Alicia believes each of us has a compelling story and that in sharing our stories, we learn that we are more alike than we are different. Her work as a writing teacher has opened doors to other work in Uganda. Ali - cia has found herself buy- ing shoes for school chil- dren, buying books for a li- brary, transporting pigs to a village in the bush, taking children to the hospital and even helping a village re - write their constitution. One of her latest projects is helping students preserve oral Acoli fables by turning them into readers for young children. Come and be inspired by the stories of hope and forgiveness penned by the youngUgandanwriterswho have captured her heart. Smoke was seen to be issu - ing from the southeast cor- ner of the structure, just under the door at the stage entrance and the audience quickly grasped the cause. Henry Sutherland, Jr., who is employed there sensed the danger of a panic of the crowd, and , walking out in front, declared the blaze was not serious. — March 26, 1924 90 years ago...
