CreiGHtON 76, LOUiSiANA- LAFAYette 66 » Doug Mc- Dermott scored 30 points and third-seeded Creigh- ton got three huge 3-point- ers in the second half from Ethan Wragge to beat Lou- isiana-Lafayette. McDermott had a double- double by halftime but went scoreless for nearly 14 min - utes of the second half, leav- ing it to Wragge's long shots to bail out the Bluejays from a potential upset by the Ra- gin' Cajuns, who attacked Creighton (27-7) with fear- less defense and rebound- ing. AriZONA 68, WeBer St. 59 » Nick Johnson scored 18 points and Aaron Gordon added 16 as top-seeded Ar- izona overcame a shaky start and a late run by We- ber State. Arizona (31-4) fell into an eight-point deficit in the opening minutes to give the 16th-seeded Wildcats hope of a monumental upset. GONZAGA 85, OKLAHOMA St. 77 » Kevin Pangos scored 26 points and Gary Bell Jr. added 17 for eighth-seeded Gonzaga, which beat Mar - cus Smart and ninth-seeded Oklahoma State. The Bulldogs (29-6) are in their 16th straight NCAA tournament. East Regional NOrtH CArOLiNA 79, PrOV- iDeNCe 77 » James Michael McAdoo sank two free throws in the final 3.5 sec- onds, and No. 6 seed North Carolina rallied to beat 11th- seeded Providence. Providence's Bryce Cot - ton scored a career-high 36 points and made one daz- zling shot after another down the stretch. But he also fumbled a long rebound in the final moments, rob - bing the Friars of a chance for a last-second miracle. MeMPHiS 71, GeOrGe WASH- iNGtON 66 » Michael Dixon Jr. scored 19 points and hit four free throws in the final 10 seconds to help Memphis hold off George Washington in the second round of the East Regional. Joe Jackson added 15 points for the eighth-seeded Tigers (24-9). They entered the tournament having lost three of five to fall out of the national rankings, and shot 49 percent in this one but struggled to put the ninth- seeded Colonials away until the final seconds. Tourney FrOM PAGe 1 By Dennis Waszak Jr. The Associated Press NeW YOrK » Michael Vick is switching green jerseys — and maybe trading his clip- board for a starting job. The New York Jets signed the former Philadel- phia Eagles quarterback to a one-year deal Friday, and released Mark Sanchez, the one-time face of the fran - chise. "I love competition and I love football," Vick said dur- ing a conference call Friday night. "And, I feel I have a lot of football left to play." Vick will present a real challenge to Jets starter Geno Smith, who played well down the stretch of his rookie season, but finished with 12 touchdowns and 21 interceptions. "As of right now," Vick said, "Geno's the starting quarterback of this football team." But, Vick also made it clear that he still envisions himself as a starter. "I wouldn't say I would necessarily be OK with sit - ting on the bench all year," Vick said. "But, I know what I signed up for and I know what I came to New York to do." He said his f irst or - der of business is compet- ing with Smith and help- ing the second-year quar- terback along. Vick said he met Smith last year during the draft process and has stayed in touch since. He also said he won't wear No. 7 with the Jets, saying it was Smith's number to keep. Vick was a free agent af - ter spending the last five seasons with the Eagles. He will be reunited with Jets of- fensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, who helped him have the best season of his career in Philadelphia in 2010.
