Everyone is pursuing goals and dreams, and when you develop relationships during that time, it's no longer just a passing thing; it's family." Beyond his friendships and role within SigEp, Joe also pursued a passion for veterinary medicine during those college years. He earned his doctorate of veterinary medicine from UC Davis and spent the next 18 years as a large animal veterinarian followed by 13 years as a small animal veterinarian. He is now the chief of staff at Banfield Pet Hospital. "The relationship that people have with their pets is incredible. They have a personal relationship with their pet that is so important. Dealing with people's lives has become paramount with me, ensuring that the pet bond people have is as good as it can be." Joe makes his home in Bakersfield, California, with his wife of 44 years, Linda. He has two sons, Will and Jack, and two grandsons, Liam and Jacob. He recently received FAA approval on his nine-year project of building his own airplane. Joe can be reached at jdendy29@hotmail.com. O ut with the old and in with the new seems to be more than a cliché when thinking about our annual basketball game and barbecue. Our event took place on Saturday, February 1, with the barbecue hosted by Gary Romoff '90, followed by a nice basketball win over Colorado State. Gary has been the food and drink host for this event for over 10 years and he doesn't seem to be losing any enthusiasm for it, saying, "I just like the energy and appreciation I receive when I am around these outstanding younger brothers of ours. It may seem like I do a lot of work, but really, the young brothers pitch in and do most of the food preparation and cooking. I just get to roam around and get everything started." Gary is quite modest. It is a simple fact that without his commitment, it just wouldn't happen. The chapter gave outstanding support with manpower, planning, and preparation. The event team, led by V.P. Programming Bryan Wilkinson '16, had the house in excellent shape. In fact, they were ready for us several hours early, and the house was in the best shape for this event that we have seen in recent memory. I think we are going to like working with this new set of elected chapter leaders. Over the years, the alumni attendance has been pretty strong, and, for the most part, we have seen some loyal participants. We always count on Alumni and Volunteer Corporation members Skip Dahlkamp '64, Bob Gibbs '63, Ryan Zangara, Virginia Alpha '04, Dann Whalen '69, Troy Hanson, Indiana Zeta '02, and Ron Smith '69. Other local alumni basketball fans this year included Ed Ryan '67, Jim Wilson '68, Warren Smit '72, and Jeff Kamholz '88. We even had some of our Orange County contingent join us. One special group of visitors was hosted by Renato Villacorte, California Mu '91, as he assembled a party of current and recently retired military brothers to join us for the afternoon. As the chapter matures and we graduate more men, we are getting an increasing number of young alumni, many of whom remain in the area. They are still energized by their SigEp experience and bring that energy to some of the events. Those attending this year included Kevin Longeuay '08, Peter Sibley '12, and Andrew Little '12. Apologies to all others who attended and were not mentioned in this article! If you haven't been to one of these barbecues lately, whether a basketball fan or not, you really should get yourself down to visit. You will be impressed with the outstanding young men who are the future leaders of this world. Annual Basketball and Barbecue Success
