For Alumni And Friends oF the CAliForniA deltA ChApter No. 18 • SpriNg 2014 SaN Diego State UNiverSity, Sigma phi epSiloN iNformatioN www.caDeltaalUmNi.org Cal Delta News V iews & T he SDSU Cal Delta Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity will make positive changes to its membership development program in the spring semester to better align with the Balanced Man Program (BMP), the core framework of our beloved fraternity. AVC President Ron Smith '69, Balanced Man Steward Ryan Zangara '04, and Membership Development Mentor Evan Wong '08 will help to educate, assist, and guide Vice President of Membership Development Alan Kidwell '16 and his committee as they properly implement the program. Additionally, Ron, Ryan, and Evan will help the leaders improve the programming opportunities available to members to ensure the program meets the needs of all chapter members year after year. In this manner, with collaborative work and dedication by the AVC, mentor board, and undergraduate leadership, members will receive a quality experience in SigEp Cal Delta. The changes to the BMP will enforce accountability to all undergraduate members, provide transparency to the AVC and mentor board, and deliver the structure for a four-year membership development program. For example, Alan Kidwell and the membership development committee are excited to implement and constantly update a shared, online challenge tracker spreadsheet that lists required events and goals for each challenge—Sigma, Phi, Epsilon, and Brother Mentor. It will show the status of every brother as he goes through a challenge. The spreadsheet will also list meeting attendance for each brother. This challenge tracker spreadsheet will hold undergraduate members accountable in that they will be sent to the standards board if they fail to progress through a challenge in a timely manner or skip chapter meetings. Since the spreadsheet will be shared with members of the AVC and mentor board, there will be transparency as far as the proper execution of the BMP. Lastly, by generating excitement around the challenges and enhancing the Brother Mentor Challenge, the chapter can offer a four-year membership development program opportunity. The top priorities of the membership development leaders are to: • Understand the philosophy, people, process, and programming associated with the Balanced Man Program. • Meet regularly to review challenge programs with the vice president of membership development and challenge coordinators. • Ensure that the Ritual is properly executed by the chapter. The membership development leaders will focus on implementing the following best practices: • Uphold single-tier membership with no pledging or hazing and help brothers see the benefits of "full rights and responsibilities" in the challenges of Sigma, Phi, Epsilon, and Brother Mentor. • Help the membership development team and the standards board understand the importance of the cardinal principles of virtue, diligence, and brotherly love. • Guide the chapter to put into practice the five philosophical tenets of (1) equal rights and responsibilities, (2) continuous development, (3) accountability, (4) living the ritual, and (5) mentoring. • Ensure a successful transition to SigEp, college, and life after college, as well as the achievement of critical skills in the six development areas of (1) SigEp, (2) sound mind, (3) sound body, (4) personal, (5) leadership, and (6) professional. Changes to Balanced Man Program Enhance Actives' Experience
