J ohn Golden '51, Nu 881, was a legacy of two generations at Sigma Nu: his uncle was a member at Nu Chapter before World War I and his father was a member of Gamma Kappa Chapter in Colorado in 1920. John also has a cousin, Jerry, who pledged the Gamma Kappa Chapter. John chose Sigma Nu because of his family legacy. He also liked the brothers in the house. He was looking for interaction that would help him accomplish his goals and work with other people. As recruitment chairman his junior year, John enjoyed upholding the values of Sigma Nu. During his tenure, he helped elect 28 new brothers for Nu Chapter. Sigma Nu offered a discipline system that was quite effective. This system taught brothers how to keep the house clean and run on high standards. For John, it helped prepare him for the workforce and taught him how to get along with people in both living situations and community/adult life. It instilled in him that all men should treat others equally and fair. John's first job outside of college was in the Army, where he was stationed in the states for training and then in Frankfurt, Germany. He later came back to settle in Kansas. He became a farmer and had a career in public service, where he served in the Kansa State Legislature as a county commissioner, chairman of the board, and as a city commissioner and mayor. He credits his success to Sigma Nu's standards of truth, honor, and love. John enjoys participating in his community and describes himself as a people person. Sigma Nu and Kansas are two subjects John enjoys discussing with pride. He is very knowledgeable in the history of the fraternity, state, storytelling, and loves the opportunity to meet anyone associated with the chapter. He feels this is his way to give back. "Because of Sigma Nu, I am a better person; it is a memorable part of my life. The age and the beauty of the Sigma Nu house in Lawrence is deeply intriguing and makes one hell of an impression on a young man," John said.
