The Corning Exchange Club was pleased to honor the following students of the month for February from Corning schools. Brendan Hoag, 8th grader at Maywood Middle School, was introduced by his teacher Phil Mishoe who ex - tolled Brendan's virtues as a student and athlete. Brendan enjoys basketball, and plays AAV basketball. Following high school Brendan wants to go to college and play Divi - sion 1 basketball. Brendan's brother, a senior at Corning High, was recently recog- nized by the Exchange Club as a student of the month, and he has already received a college scholarship based on his grades and basketball skills. Senior Miquel Ramirez, senior at Centennial High, was introduced by teacher Mr. Beardsly who said that Miquel is self-motivated, and is a class leader. Miquel enjoys biking, hunting and fishing, and af - ter graduation intends to go to either Butte or Shasta College to pursue further training in welding and die - sel technology. Ana Carrillo, Corning High Senior, was introduced by her teacher Mrs. Savage who praised Ana's scholastic and athletic excellence. Ana participates in cross coun - try, track, soccer, basket- ball, drill team, softball and Interact, and enjoys reading, running and dancing. After graduation she intends to go to Chico State and major in Kinesiology or Anthropol - ogy. Andrea Carbajal, is a 6th grader at Woodson Elemen- tary, and was introduced by teacher Mrs. Jones. Mrs. Jones indicated that Andrea is a delight to work with and indicated that she is a great student and class leader. After graduating from high school Andrea wants to go to a good college with the goal of becoming a dentist or doc - tor. It is always a pleasure for Exchange Club members to honor local students of the month, and recognize that in order to be outstanding students requires that they have supportive parents and great teachers. Last year, owner Fred Spanfelner took students on a tour of the nursery. They saw sprouting walnut seeds, talked about how they de - cided which seedlings they would keep for production and watched grafting of one year old walnut trees. Recently the students re - turned to the nursery and watched a 20,000-pound machine dig up two-year-old grafted trees. Students had the amazing experience of pulling out the dug up trees, shaking them and readying them for transport.
