Vadim Ghirda — The associaTed Press a masked member of the newly formed army of crimea, wearing a ribbon in the colors of the russian flag, looks up at a military base gate in simferopol, Ukraine, on Thursday. By Mike Eckel The Associated Press SI M FE ROPOL , UkRaInE » Russia conducted new mili- tary maneuvers near its bor- der with Ukraine on Thurs- day, and President Vlad- imir Putin said the world shouldn't blame his country for what he called Ukraine's "internal crisis." In Crimea, where the public will vote on Sunday whether to break away from Ukraine and become part of Russia, jittery residents lined up at their banks to withdraw cash from their accounts amid uncertainty over the future of the penin - sula, which Russian troops now control. "These people are afraid their bank will collapse and no one wants to lose their money," said resident Ta - tiana Sivukhina. "Nobody knows what will happen to- morrow." U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian For- eign Minister Sergey Lavrov plan to meet in London on Friday in a last-ditch bid to end the international stand - off over the Crimean refer- endum, which Ukraine and the West have rejected as il- legitimate. German Chancellor An- gela Merkel sharply criti- cized Russia, saying the ter- ritorial integrity of Ukraine cannot be compromised. Speaking to Germany's Parliament, Merkel said Russia risks "massive" po - litical and economic conse- quences, if it does not en- ter into "negotiations that achieve results" over the sit- uation in Ukraine. During the Ukrainian cri- sis, the U.S. has sent addi- tional fighter jets to Poland and Lithuania. Russian re- sponded on Thursday by de- ploying six fighter jets to Be- larus, its ally. Russian troops in Ukraine war games Uncertainty reigns in weekend referendum wORLd a royal malaysian Navy Fennec helicopter prepares to depart to aid in the efforts for the missing malaysia airlines plane over the straits of malacca, malaysia, on Thursday. The royal malaysiaN NaVy — The associaTed Press By Chris Brummitt The Associated Press kUaLa LUMPUR, MaLaySIa » A Malaysia Airlines plane sent signals to a satellite for four hours after the aircraft went missing, an indication that it was still flying for hundreds of miles or more, a U.S. official briefed on the search said Thursday. Six days after the plane with 239 people aboard dis - appeared, Malaysian author- ities expanded their search westward toward India, say- ing the aircraft may have flown for several hours af- ter its last contact with the ground shortly after takeoff from Kuala Lumpur for Bei- jing. A string of previous clues about Flight MH370 have led nowhere. " M H 3 70 went com - pletely silent over the open ocean," said Malaysia's act- ing Transport Minister His- hammuddin Hussein. "This is a crisis situation. It is a very complex operation, and it is not obviously easy. We are devoting all our energies to the task at hand." The U.S. official, who spoke on condition of ano - nymity because he wasn't authorized to discuss the situation by name, said the Boeing 777-200 wasn't transmitting data to the sat - ellite, but was instead send- ing out a signal to establish contact. Boeing offers a satellite service that can receive a stream of data during flight on how the aircraft is func - tioning and relay the infor- mation to the plane's home base. The idea is to provide information before the plane lands on whether mainte - nance work or repairs are needed. Malaysia Airlines didn't subscribe to that service, but the plane still had the capability to connect with the satellite and was auto - matically sending pings, the official said. "It's like when your cell- phone is off but it still sends out a little 'I'm here' mes- sage to the cellphone net- work," the official said. "That's how sometimes they can triangulate your posi- tion even though you're not calling because the phone every so often sends out a little bleep. That's sort of what this thing was doing." If the plane had disinte - grated during flight or had suffered some other cata- strophic failure, all signals — the pings to the satellite, the data messages and the transponder — would be ex - pected to stop at the same time. One part of the hunt is in the South China Sea, where the aircraft was seen on ci - vilian radar flying northeast before vanishing without any indication of technical problems. A similar-sized search is also being con - ducted in the Strait of Ma- lacca because of military ra- dar sightings that might in- dicate the plane turned in that direction after its last contact, passing over the Malay Peninsula.
