The Associated Press BEVERLY HILLS » A veteran Los Angeles police officer was killed and his rookie partner was critically in - jured Friday when their pa- trol car collided with a big rig on a residential street. The truck driver also was injured. The Hollywood division officers were responding to a call of unknown trou - ble when the "catastrophic" collision occurred, Los An- geles Police Chief Charlie Beck said. The circumstances of the 8 a.m. crash in an area of narrow, curving residential streets were under investi - gation. The county coroner's of- fice identified the slain of- ficer as Nicholas Choung Lee, 40. Beck said he was a 10 -year veteran and a highly respected training officer. Lee was training a rookie who was only three months out of the police academy when their cr uiser col - lided w ith a truck haul- ing a trash container and carrying a Bobcat loader down a steep road, author- ities said. The patrol car was torn apart and practically demol- ished in the crash. The truck, which wound up on its side, may have lost its brakes on the hill, Beck said. The driver and the rookie were both injured but will survive, he said. "She is alert, in consider - able pain" but didn't require surgery, the chief said. "She has a tremendous heart. She is determined to recover from her injuries." The driver was hospital - ized in serious condition, au- thorities said. Police Commission Pres- ident Steve Soboroff vis- ited the injured officer in the hospital, where she was surrounded by friends and family. "She was wearing a neck brace and she said she had a concussion and she had some bruises on her face and she's remarkably lu - cid," he said. "Everyone in the room feels that she is the luckiest unlucky person in the world" for surviving the horrendous crash, So - boroff said. "She's strong and she's go- ing to make it through this," Mayor Eric Garcetti said. He ordered city flags lowered to half-staff to honor Lee. "We grieve a hero this morning, an officer who gave his life in the service of Los Angeles," Garcetti said. Shortly before 12:30 p.m., police officers moved a flag- covered gurney carrying the officer's body from the acci - dent scene to an ambulance between long rows of salut- ing officers. A circle of fire- fighters, their helmets doffed in respect, watched beside a fire engine. Lee's body was taken to the coroner's office, where it again passed through lines of saluting colleagues. Although the crash site at Robert Lane and Loma Vista Drive is in the city of Beverly Hills, it is immediately adja - cent to sections of Los Ange- les. The area is close to the landmark Greystone Man- sion, a 1920s estate built by an oil tycoon. The Associated Press SaN JoSE » Two brothers in Northern California face murder charges in the case of a woman found strangled to death in her car nearly 25 years ago, authorities said Friday. David Zimmer, 66, of Half Moon Bay, was ar - rested Friday in the slay- ing of his estranged wife, Cathy Zimmer. Her body was found wrapped in a patchwork quilt in the backseat of her Chrysler New Yorker in a parking lot at San Jose Interna - tional Airport in 1989, the Santa Clara County dis- trict attorney's office said. David Zimmer's brother, Robert Zimmer, 69, of Santa Clara, was arrested last week on similar charges. Their arrests come a month after investigators released new evidence in hopes of finally solving the case: photos of the large, colorful quilt that covered Cathy Zimmer's body when she was found March 10, 1989. Prosecutors said an in - vestigation revealed the couple was going through a separation at the time Cathy Zimmer was killed. The 38-year-old mother of two worked part-time at a real estate office and took classes at San Jose State University, where she was last seen two days before her body was discovered. Within a month of his wife's slaying, David Zim - mer sold their home for more than $225,000 and collected from two life in- surance policies totaling $183,000, authorities said. Ye t e v i d e n c e a l s o linked Rober t Zimmer to the case, according to cour t documents. Ev i - dence found "in an inti- mate area" of an item of Cathy Zimmer's clothing matched Robert Zimmer's DNA profile, investigators wrote in a court affidavit. Robert Zimmer told his daughter that he had met with Cathy Zimmer on the day she was killed, that he was in the car with Cathy Zimmer because he was worried about her, and that he was concerned that his fingerprints would be found in the car, thus implicating him in her murder, investi - gators wrote. During an interview with investigators two months ago, the court document said, Robert Zimmer told them that had had no per - sonal or sexual relationship with Cathy Zimmer. When asked if he was ever alone in a car with Cathy Zim - mer, he stated that he "did not recall." Dav id Zi m mer wa s scheduled to be arraigned next week. Robert Zimmer already has made an initial appearance in court and is due back April 18. Both are being held with - out bail. It was not known if they had retained lawyers who could be reached for comment. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the hi ghest bidder at the auc- i b g tion, you are or may be respon- sible for paying off all liens se- nior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property.
