The Associated Press WASHINGTON » A nd on Thursday, the Dalai Lama prayed in the U.S. Senate. With dozen of lawmakers listening raptly, the Nobel laureate from Tibet opened the session with his favorite prayer and words of advice. He delivered his brief remarks in both a foreign tongue as well as self-described "bro - ken English." "With our thoughts, we make our world," said the Dalai Lama, dressed in gold and red robes. "Our mind is central and precedes our deeds. Speak or act with a pure mind and happiness will follow you like a shadow that never leaves." He hoped for joy in the world and good fortune. Offer ing his favor ite prayer, he said that "as long as space remains and as long as sentient beings remain, until then may I, too, remain and help dispel the misery of the world." Senators bowed their heads as the Dalai Lama prayed. Staff filled the back rows of the chamber and vis - itors observed from the gal- lery above. The opening ses- sion drew more people than a typical start to the Senate day. Before his prayer, Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, a Buddhist, had greeted the Dalai Lama, and the two clasped hands. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and the Dalai Lama bowed heads and touched briefly. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., thanked the Dalai Lama for his prayers and words of encouragement. "The Dalai Lama is well- known throughout the world as a spiritual leader of the Ti - betan people and for spread- ing the gospel of peace and compassion and love of our fellow human beings," Reid said. The Senate often has guest chaplains offer the opening prayer. The Dalai Lama gave up his political role as the leader of the Tibetan gov - ernment-in-exile in 2011. On Feb. 21, President Barack Obama granted an au- dience to the Dalai Lama over the strong objections from China that the U.S. was med- dling it its affairs. Beijing con- siders the Dalai Lama an anti- Chinese separatist because of his quest for greater Tibetan autonomy. Later in the day, the Da - lai Lama met House leaders, who set aside partisan differ- ences to welcome him. Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said the fight for religious freedom and tol - erance has always brought Congress together, a senti- ment echoed by Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of Cal- ifornia. She described the situation in Tibet as a "chal- lenge to the conscience of the world." The Dalai Lama paid trib- ute to America as a "cham- pion of democracy and free- dom" and leading nation of the free world, but other- wise steered clear of poli- tics. Also attending the meet- ing was Lobsang Sangay, who was elected in 2011 as prime minister of Tibet's government-in-exile, and has since taken on the po - litical leadership role that the Dalai Lama once held. INTerNATIONAl fAITH Dalai Lama speaks words of wisdom in Senate Israel is the only nation in history to be restored af- ter two millennia of exile and obliteration. She is the only nation to have lost half her population in a mas - sive act of genocide only to become the most pow- erful nation in her region and a world leader in multi- ple technologies. She is the only nation in her region to respond to international di - sasters on a scale propor- tional to what we Ameri- cans do, and she is unique to her region as an ex- porter of the fruits of both agriculture and high tech- nology. Israel is the sole nuclear power in the Middle East – so far – and the only na - tion to live under the con- stant threat of annihilation at the hands of nations with twenty times her popula- tion. She has beaten back wars of extermination five times in her sixty-five years of life. And she is the only nation with a vital interest in the recent peace talks with Iran to be excluded by our secretary of state from those talks. The United States and multiple allies now seek to dictate peace to her if she gives up more than half her territory – in - cluding the portions that make possible the defense of the rest – portions won in battle when she was at - tacked simultaneously by five nations. And we won- der why she views her most dependable ally – us, at least in the past – with sus- picion. According to the Associ- ated Press piece dated Jan- uary 2, "Kerry would not impose ideas…Instead he is allowing time for debate," but even the AP admits the US expects a final agree - ment by May that includes Israel giving up most of her capitol city and the site of the Temple of Yahweh along with much of Judea and Samaria. The Pales - tinians would be asked to recognize Israel as a Jew- ish state, which in their minds compromises the right of return for their refugees and the rights of nearly two million Arabs who are Israeli citizens liv- ing in Israel. The AP goes on to refer to Palestinians who "fled or were expelled in the war over Israel's cre - ation in 1948." This nonsense masquer- ades as journalism. Reality is the Arab-Israelis are not and have never been Pal- estinian in any sense; they are Israelis who live a lot better, and a lot freer, than any Palestin - ians in Gaza or the West Bank. Many of them drive Mercedes au - tos and live in high rise buildings, unlike their pov- erty-stricken brethren who are so frequently photo- graphed. I have seen this with my own eyes. No Ar- abs were expelled from Is- rael in 1948; many left de- spite Israeli pleas that they remain, although it is true they have not been allowed to return after turning their backs on their neigh - bors who were attacked by multiple armies trained and encouraged by the es- caping Nazis of a defeated Germany. Fact is that Is- rael withdrew from Gaza in 2005 and their thanks has been a rain of rockets and bombers. I have stood in a marketplace with only one exit in which Palestinians with AK47s mowed down shoppers just a few years back. Truth is there has never been a nation called Palestine until Yasser Ara - fat invented it less than half a century ago. The Arab people who left Israel were citizens of Jordan, Syria, and Egypt; their own na - tions refused to receive them and so they became refugees. A required – by John Kerry – goodwill gesture before talks begin was the release of twenty-six ter - rorists held in Israeli jails. No corresponding ges- ture was required of the Palestinian Authority. Those released include school bus bombers; they returned home to a he - roes' welcome. How intel- ligent people can believe the Palestinians are seri- ous about anything but de- stroying Israel is beyond imagination. American citizens need to demand this mirage of a peace pro - cess be halted until the Palestinians prove they are serious about it – at a minimum. Our decision is a plumb line of our na - tional character. If you are a Christian in love with the God who be- came flesh in Christ – and the one does not necessar- ily imply the other – the fact that God promised to restore and protect Is- rael while destroying those who curse her in Ezekiel 16, Zechariah 12-14, Isaiah 49- 54, and other places beyond count – should be enough to clarify His will in the mat - ter. That we Christians are grafted onto the Jew- ish people, and so bound to their fate and the favor God shows them, is stated sim- ply and directly in Romans 11 and in other places. Our responsibilities are as clear as our rights. And if you are not a Christian it is a matter of simple justice. James A. GOdTAlk Israel — the plumb line of the world Jim Wilson Staff reports All are welcome to gather at 7 Sunday evenings during Lent from March 9 through April 13, at St. Peter's Epis - copal Church to worship at Taizé Prayer service. Taizé Prayer provides a time for meditation, prayer and song. Our prayers are for others, our families, our churches and the com - munity of Red Bluff. Taizé Prayer warms our hearts and offers a time for all Christians to pray together in Christ's name. What helps us focus on God? It is relaxing for me. It helps me put the week in perspective. Sometimes I get frazzled by things I can't change but the prayer helps me let it all go. It in - v ites a sense of ca lm- ing restoration. The mu- sic runs through my mind like a warm comforting breeze. Touching the can- dlelit cross helps me be- come aware of Christ's pres- ence. I leave with a sense of comfort and peace. These words are a shared collec- tion of thoughts that cap- ture the meditative experi- ence of Taizé Prayer. Chris- tian worshippers from the Methodist, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic and Epis- copal traditions work join together in this ecumenical prayer service. For more information call 527-5205 or email stpeters@ sbcglobal.net. More informa - tion about Taizé Prayer and the Taizé community may be found online at www.taize.fr.
