Alpha Nu Chapter 2 Jason McElvaney '93 Finds Support in Sigma Chi Alumni Groups h aving the advantage of attending high school in Austin, Jason McElvaney '93 approached fraternity recruitment at the University of Texas with knowledge of the "lay of the land." He identified most with Sigma Chi and found the Chapter to be a good fit with his personality. Jason earned a bachelor of arts in government and holds a master of business administration from Baylor University. Today he is owner of public affairs firm McElvaney Public Affairs, which specializes in government relations, grassroots advocacy, communications, and strategic and political counsel. Jason got started in the public affairs field by working part time in college at a state agency, then taking a summer internship in Washington, D.C. After graduating, he moved to D.C. and worked there for 10 years. Moving back to Austin led to the position of legislative director to Texas State Representative Allan Ritter and then director of government affairs for the Texas County and District Retirement System. Jason feels that Sigma Chi aided his career in terms of networking. "In D.C., just like in Austin, there are alumni that can open doors for you," he said. Looking back at his time as an undergraduate, Jason says he could have gotten more involved in campus activities outside of the Greek community. "At The University of Texas, the Greek system is pretty insulated. I wish I would have taken advantage of some of the other activities and events the university provided." To the active members, Jason offers the advice of starting to think professionally sooner. "I would recommend starting early on internships or summer jobs. Start seeking whatever career path you want while you are in school." He also emphasizes the importance of volunteering one's time and giving back to your community. Close friendships have stayed with Jason from his time living in the Chapter House. He stays in touch with local alumni groups, attending monthly breakfast and happy hour events. He also maintains friendships with members of his pledge class that live across the country. For Jason, the bonds of brotherhood can cover any distance and surpass the test of time. Jason and his wife, Sarah, live in Austin with their two children, Will and Avery. Jason enjoys hockey, biking, reading, and attending his kids' activities. Welsch '69 went through recruitment at the suggestion of his wife, Phyllis, an Alpha Chi Omega at The University of Texas. He was drawn to Sigma Chi because of the different personalities, temperaments, talents, and convictions of the men. Linden said, "As I have gone through life and met other Sigma Chis, I am amazed how strong the bonds of brotherhood exist. It doesn't matter if there is an age difference or social economic difference. When you meet another Sigma Chi, you know he is a brother; you both feel the bonds of brotherhood." Linden received a BBA in accounting and worked in Houston and Midland for several years before returning to Austin to own a CPA practice in 1978. He retired in 2005 and remains active with the Chapter. He reengaged with Alpha Nu upon returning to Austin, as their financial advisor, as the Austin Alumni Chapter treasurer, and in 1993 as chairman of the house campaign. Today, he is treasurer for the Alpha Nu House Corporation and holds the position of Grand Praetor for the Central Texas Province. He was inducted into Sigma Chi's Order of Constantine in June 2011 at the Grand Chapter meeting in Dallas. Linden stays involved with the Chapter because he sees the future in the undergraduate members. "They are smart, have great values and, I believe, will be our country's future leaders. It is my hope that, in some small way, I can be a positive influence on these young men as they start on their life's journey in college," he said. He encourages other alumni to get involved with the Chapter. "The experience is tremendously rewarding and it will renew your faith in the younger generation and future of our country. These young men need and seek our help; they are extremely appreciative of the support and mentoring by the alumni. Then they know what being a Sigma Chi means, and you are a Sigma Chi for life." Greek life has become a part of the Welsch family as Linden's children followed in his and Phyllis' footsteps. Their son, Linden L. was initiated into Sigma Chi at Texas State University before transferring and remaining active with the Alpha Nu chapter at The University of Texas at Austin. Daughter Leslie joined Alpha Chi Omega at TCU. The family also has three grandchildren: Lanning, Travis, and Michael. Linden is active in the Northwest Austin Rotary Club and is treasurer of Hope Presbyterian church. He enjoys playing golf, following UT sports, and traveling. You can contact him at lrwcpa@gmail.com.
