The lion's lore page 2 SAE Going Strong We have been working diligently over the past 12 months and are rapidly moving in a positive direction toward another extraordinary year. Spring 2014 is the two-year mark of being a dry fraternity. Initially it was a struggle to find alternative social events that did not involve alcohol, but the rewards were obvious as we have not only increased our involvement in philanthropy but also our ability to recruit a higher- level student. With this and new leadership, our GPA has continued to improve. We believe SAE is the benchmark for all other fraternities. Accomplishments Our goals are simple: enhance membership and develop as True Gentlemen. We grew once again last semester and had 38 men living in the chapter house. Our goal for this year is to rise to 50, and eventually reach maximum capacity at 55. With our increased presence on campus through philanthropy and giving back to the community, this should not be an issue. Recruitment Quality Following last year's success with recruitment, we decided to stay with our grid sheet that evaluates potential new members (PNMs) by rating each in terms of academics, athletics, and extracurricular actives. This gives us a great insight as to how the PNMs lead their lives and how they may fit into our fraternity. Currently, the minimum GPA to pledge SAE for current college students is 3.0 and high school seniors is 3.4. As of this letter, we have four men signed for spring 2014. We believe that with the positive steps we have taken over the last year, the outlook for summer/fall 2014 recruitment is strong. Scholarly Work Academics are the most important part of college, and the men of Kansas Beta have proven that, with hard work, good results will follow. For the last three semesters our overall GPA has improved to a 2.9, which is a dramatic increase from 2.5 just 18 months ago. Our goal for the next semester is to meet or exceed 3.0, which would put us above the all-male average at Kansas State. Improved grades are no accident, as brothers have been spending extra time in the library due to revamped study hours and a focus on academics. Looking toward the Future We are proud of the recognition that goes with being the oldest Greek organization on campus. None of this could have been done without supportive alumni. Kansas Beta will never be in turmoil because of the great alumni who back it. If you know of any rush prospects, please contact me at your earliest convenience. Thanks to your generosity, we have collected in cash more than $1 million of the $1.2 million pledged to date. I hope all will take on the challenge of completing your pledges and helping us finalize the campaign. Where Your Money Has Gone The Centennial Campaign funds were used as follows: • Mortgage principal and interest payments $555,000 • Chapter house renovation and repairs $215,000 • Fundraising expenses $160,000 • Scholarships and Leadership School $25,000 TOTAL $955,000 Positive Chapter Trends The performance trends we have seen in the chapter are positive. Since Kansas Beta voted to go dry over two years ago, grades have improved and our recruitment strategies have attracted the type of fraternity brothers we want at 1015 Denison. Ensuring Our Legacy Thanks to your generosity, the chapter house is in great physical shape. Together, the active chapter and supportive alumni, such as John Hatfield '77, chapter faculty advisor, Paul Lacy '81, chapter financial advisor, and Bill Shaw '75, chapter facility advisor, have made significant progress on chapter matters. While we have lowered our debt from nearly $1 million at campaign inception, it currently stands at over $650,000. Although many brothers have stepped up to support our chapter and contribute in important ways, we need your continued support for our young brothers, for the chapter's physical structure, and to completely eliminate our $650,000 debt balance.
