KAnsAs betA house corPorAtion of sigmA AlPhA ePsilon P.o. box 14692 lenexA, Ks 66285 RetuRn SeRvice RequeSted THE lion's lore W e were pleased to have Ernie Swanson '43, his wife, Lois '45, a member of the Kansas State Chi Omega chapter, and daughter, Sarah Schlotterback '73, also a member of the Kansas State Chi Omega chapter, join us for the 100-year anniversary weekend. Ernie, originally from Axtell, Kansas, graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. He made his career as an engineer for the Bailey Meter Company (later Bailey Controls) located in Wickliffe, Ohio. He also served in the Army during World War II and remained in the Army Reserves, retiring as a colonel. He lives in Gates Mills, Ohio (a suburb of Cleveland). Not only did Ernie and his family attend all the weekend activities, but he was presented with a special 70-year membership certificate and addressed the group at the Saturday evening dinner and dance. Ernie, thank you for your longtime support of Kansas Beta! C harles Hostetler '60 entered Chapter Eternal on December 8, 2013, in Manhattan, Kansas, at the age of 75 after a courageous battle with cancer. Upon graduation from KSU, Charlie entered the University of Kansas Law School where he served on Kansas Law Review and as a member of the Law School Board of Governors. Recently, Charlie was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honor bestowed by the KU Law School. Charlie was appointed to the Kansas Board of Regents in 1989 for a four-year term. He served as a delegate to the National Republican Convention in Kansas City in 1976 and as a Kansas member of the U.S. Electoral College in the presidential election of 2000. Following decades of service to Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Charlie received the SAE Phoenix Award in 2007, the Order of Minerva Award in 2010, and the KSU Greek Letter Lifetime Alumni Award in 2010. Initiated on March 9, 1957, with his father, Alvin, by his side, Charlie was recognized as a 50-year member of Kansas Beta in 2007. Many of his fraternity brothers credit him with maintaining the chapter from 1990 to 2007 while serving as president of the House Corporation. A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Charlie is survived by his wife, Julie; daughters, Cynthia and Sue; stepson, Michael Widman; stepdaughter, Karen Root; three grandchildren; and sister, Sue Sherwood. Honoring a Legacy In MeMory of Charles hostetler '60 70-Year Member Attends Centennial Celebration Honoring Ernie Swanson '43 J. Steven Barlow '62 entered Chapter Eternal on January 10, 2014, at Perry Memorial Hospital. Steve was born on October 7, 1939, in Wichita, Kan., to Vernon Westfall and Martha (Stevenson) Barlow. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1962 with a degree in business administration and played football in college. Steve started working at Bruce Monument Company in 1979 and, after the passing of his father-in-law, he moved to Illinois and learned the craft of farming. He married Susan Peterson on June 5, 1961, in Manhattan, Kan. Steve had extensive memberships in Kansas and Princeton, including First Presbyterian Church, Toastmasters, Jaycees, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, Bureau County Senior Citizens Association Board, Princeton Elementary School Board, volunteer ambulance driver/CPR instructor, and Bureau County Farm Board. Steve is survived by his wife and four children: Jay, Sarah, Rebekah, and Rachel, all of Princeton. Surviving as well are 13 grandchildren. J. Steven Barlow '62 enterS Chapter eternal
