Gunther '10 Blake Weihs '10 Cole Reeder '13 F or Tom Wendorf '85, the men of Theta Chi came through in a way that made his college experience possible. He went through recruitment and chose Theta Chi. Paying his own way through college, after one semester it became apparent that he needed a way to cut expenses. The brothers went to bat for him, petitioning the University's housing program to allow him to live in the chapter house that very first year. "Theta Chi put me in a position to make it at Drake. They worked with my finances to let me live in the house; I often borrowed cars to get to work, and brothers helped me out on a one-off basis. I wouldn't have been able to do it without the fraternity." "They were a class act on campus and very diverse. Coming from a small town in Wisconsin, I thought Theta Chi was an enlightening and fun experience. The personalities of those in the house, the way they handled themselves and approached academics, all formed a really good foundation for me, socially and academically—from my pledge dad, Matt Crowl '84, on up to my great-grandfather, Tom Rossley '82." So now, nearly 30 years after Tom graduated, the tables are turned and Theta Chi is in the position to receive the help of its alumni. As the chapter works to rebuild its home, alumni who received so much from the chapter have the chance to give back. "I'd been considering ways to contribute to the house for the last few years, so when Tom Rossley reached out to me about this campaign, it sounded like a great opportunity to get involved. Building a new house is becoming a bonding agent for the alumni and more than just a project. The project is important, but it's also bringing people together and pushing them to get in touch with others." "I don't believe that there's another fraternity on campus that can compete with us as far as alumni diversity and support if we can really tap into it." Alumnus Repays Theta Chi for His College Experience CHAPTER FOCUSES ON FALL PHILANTHROPY PROJECTS T he fall semester was a whirlwind of activity, keeping us very busy. I hope this information gives you an idea of how we spend our time and the future we're working toward at Theta Chi. WORK WEEK The men of Theta Chi got down and dirty during work week from back-breaking lifting to scrubbing every corner of the house. One particular project was filling a large pothole that appeared in the middle of the driveway during the summer. Using the expertise of senior members Nick Hamilton '15 and Kevin Riley '14, the pothole was filled to perfection. All brothers participated in wiping and reorganizing the chapter room, theatre room, and trophy room to better reflect the accomplishments of past and recent Theta Chi brothers. A group of brothers also dedicated their time and effort to put together a Jam Room in the basement. Musically inclined brothers now have the freedom to experiment and create their own music. Work week was a true bonding experience, as members had to work together to ready the house for an amazing Recruitment Week. By viewing the Theta Chi house from start to finish, we all felt the sense of accomplishment provided through teamwork and diligence. PARENTS' WEEKEND Parents' Weekend is that special time of the year where all those "missed" calls and Skype sessions are forgotten. Parents had a chance to enjoy a barbecue at Theta Chi and visit with their sons. New members were honored with a pinning ceremony and a chance to introduce their parents to their home away from home. GI THETA CHI This year our philanthropy benefitted the Wounded Warriors Project, which offers programs, service, and events for wounded veterans. Our events included a Mr. Theta Chi talent show, where members showed off their vocal skills, painting strokes, swim routines, and patriotism via short skits; a spaghetti dinner cooked and hosted at Theta Chi; and a fundraiser at the local Peggy's Tavern (Continued on page 4)
