Saturday, March 12, 2011 – Daily News – 5A Religion Faith&Worship Church news You can count on God As you take a look back in his- tory you can see how much cul- tures, styles, fads, priorities and technology have changed over the years …Even the very earth and atmosphere we live in are constantly changing. Change is taking place all the time—some good and some not so good! Courtesy photo Pastor John Bohrer of Antelope Home Fellowship stands with some members of his congregation holding almost 100 pairs of socks they collected for the clients of PATH. The congregation also cooks meals for PATH twice a month. The group meets at Berrendos Middle School, 401 Chestnut Ave., in Red Bluff. Revival Neighborhood Full Gospel Church, 901 South St., in Corning will present a 21 Century Revival Sunday through Wednesday. Come and see Rod Vincent who has been preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ for more than 26 years and has ministered on television and radio programs. Vincent was born and raised Catholic in South Louisiana and at the age of 21 came to know the saving power of Jesus Christ. Without a doubt he has the touch of God upon his life and ministry. Come and receive a miracle in your life during this Holy Ghost anointed meeting. Times are 6 p.m. Sunday and 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. For more information call 824-2323. Gospel of John study offered A special Lenten study on the Gospel of John will be offered for four weeks during Lent at St. Peter’s Epsi- copal Church, 510 Jefferson St. in downtown Red Bluff. Members of the community are invited to partic- ipate on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. from March 17 through April 7. The study of the Gospel of John will be based on the DVD series by Professor Luke Timothy Johnson, a Robert W. Woodruff Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology. He holds a Masters of Divinity in Theology and an M.A. in Religious Studies, as well as a Ph.D in New Testament Studies from Yale Universi- ty. A former Benedictine monk, Johnson has written more than 20 books. Johnson’s studies have proven to be quite popular with attendees this past year at the Thursday night study groups. For more information contact St. Peter’s at 527-5205 or stpeters@sbcglobal.net. As I read God’s word and find scriptures such as, "For I am the Lord, I do not change…" Malachi 3:6, or "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever" Hebrews 13:8 and, "For all the promises in Him are yes and in Him amen" II Corinthians 1:20, I find great comfort by knowing that God is not wishy washy, but consistent. These verses make it easy to put your hope and faith in Him. In other words, it is reassur- ing to put your confidence in the One who does not change. One characteristic about God stands out – one aspect that never changes is his compassion towards mankind. Compassion will always compel action. Mark’s Gospel account tells us that it was compassion that moved Jesus to touch a leper. When He did, power was trans- ferred from Jesus to the leper and the horrific disease called leprosy left the man and he was healed. That compassionate touch from Jesus healed much deeper wounds than just the outside physical pain that this man was experiencing. The touch of Jesus went deep within to reach this man's pain of rejection, the pain of losing family and friends and the emotional pain of not having a place in society. This touch permeated and healed the devastation of humili- ation from being disfigured and the shame of having to cry out "unclean" every- where he went. The compassion of God is evident through- out the bible: • Ps. 78:38 "He being full of compassion, for- gave their iniquity" • Matt 14:14 "Jesus saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them and healed their sick" Larry • Matt. 15:32 "Jesus said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with me for three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry…." Then Jesus fed 4,000 with 7 loaves of bread and a few fish. Jensen GodTalk city and temple had been burned to the ground. The once proud and thriving city had been reduced to rubble, was barren and the exile had begun. In the face of death and destruction, in the midst of terrible tragedy, with life com- ing apart at the seams Jeremiah makes a dec- laration of faith and proclaims, "Great is your faithfulness." Before Jeremiah’s declaration of faith he reminded himself of how great his God was—how God’s com- passion had never failed him and how He It was compassion that held Jesus to the cross so that mankind could be redeemed from poverty, sickness and spiritual death. God is faithful. We can count on His compassion, it never fails. In Lamentations, Jeremiah writes words of hope, "Through the Lords mercies we are not con- sumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithful- ness." Lamentations 3:22-23 When Jeremiah wrote these powerful words, it wasn’t a pleasant, victorious time in his life or in the life of his country. Everything he knew was being turned upside down and falling apart all around him. Jerusalem had just been invaded and the had promised to remain faithful in the future. Jeremiah turns tragedy into triumph by crying out in faith. Yes, time carries on, technolo- gies move forward, cultures keep changing but God is faithful, His compassion stays the same and His will for you does not change. He wants you to be a success and every promise in His word can be yours if you dare to believe him. Speak Life Thank you Father, that in this ever changing world you are the one thing that will never change. I put my faith, hope and trust in you and your word. Pastor Larry Jensen has partnered with his wife, Chaunda, to minister in Red Bluff as a pastor, youth pastor, itinerant support pastor for small churches, and short-term missionary for the past 19 years. Taize worship services offered during Lent For six weeks during Lent through April 10, a Taize prayer service will be offered on Sunday evenings at 7 p.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, on the corner of Elm and Jefferson streets in Red Bluff. All are welcome to come and see. Jesus called others to follow him saying, “Come and see.” An ecumenical endeavor, Taize prayer is open to all who seek a time of refresh- ment in prayer. The group gathers to hear words of scripture, offer healing prayer, share a peaceful silence and sing meditative songs. The words of Carolyn Myss, author of Entering the Castle, describe the experience of chanting meditation: “the words awaken the soul with a kind of sacred music and allow it to enter a deeper truth.” The hope is that the souls of all who gather will awaken to a deep- er truth as those who are beloved of Christ. The Taize service is co-sponsored by the con- gregations of Tehama County United Methodist Churches, the Presbyterian Church of Red Bluff, Sacred Heart Catholic Church and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.
